Restoring Hi-lift

So I was giving a Hi-lift from my buddy after helping him with some stuff around the house. It looks kinda rusty and he didnt have the bar that comes with it. I want to restore it back so where it works smooth and looks good.I want to mount it to the bed rail when im done with it, Also i do not have any experience with one of these things

Any suggestions what i should do?.........Sandblast,Paint,Grease?

Spray lots of Seafoam Deep Creep or PB Blaster and that will really help it out

 

I just rebuilt my hilift a few months ago. Mine was in bad shape too since it's lived on the tire carrier on my Land Cruiser for several winters.

These jacks are bombproof so they are worth the effort to rebuild. It doesn't take much but keeping it in good working order is key. First thing you need to do is buy one of the rebuild kits that comes with new climbing pins, springs and shear pin.


Then take the whole thing apart and clean off as much rust as you can. If you can sandblast it that's great. I just went at it with a wire brush. Once you get it cleaned up as best you can, I used some Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer to prime it and then sprayed it with 3-4 coats of Rustoleum Semi-Gloss Black. Once it was all dry I assembled it with the new climbing pins etc and get it all back together. That's all there is too it. Makes a HUGE difference and I feel much safer using it again.

you can see how rusted the pins were. It was not a smooth operation to use this in this condition.
