I have a 1st gen. Tacoma that will be loaded down pretty well with armor, gear and 8000lb winch. I just saw the "make your own line" thread but I just dont have time for that right now nor do I trust myself enough. I ordered an ARB winch extension strap for it and then realized it was rated to 9900lb. It occurred to me that if I am using a snatch block the pulling force could be greater than 9900lb. So then I ordered the 17500lb strap and upon receiving it ,it's HUGE, plus someone said a strap rated to high could result in damage instead of failing when too much force is applied, and I'm wondering if this is overkill. I'm not sure which strap to return. Advice is greatly appreciated.

I do not have a ton of experience with tow straps or winching and hopefully a recovery expert can chime in but i would say you would want the higher rated i have one that is 15000 i wouldnt want it to fail when i really need it on the trail.

    Winch extension strap??

Is that just a fancy word for a 'recovery strap'??

What exactly are you using this 'extension strap' for??

I've offroaded & owned a winch & straps for 8+ years - so I'm a bit unsure what you are referring to.

If I understand correctly the extension strap is like a tow strap, very little stretch and force should be applied gradually because there is no "give".

A recovery strap is kinda like a bungee, force can be applied with a running tug and it will stretch out to multiply the pulling force on the stuck vehicle.

NOT A TOW STRAP. Winch Line extension strap.

Used in cases where your winch cable/line is not long enough to reach your anchor, or a snatch block is needed and much of your winch line length is used up between one or more snatch blocks, thus reducing the distance you have available to your anchor. Using one would also keep more line on the drum, therefore the winch would be in it's more optimal power range.

With this in mind, if your snatch pulley system is more or less linear, would increase the load on the recovery gear as much as double, thus my question as to whether 9,900 or 17,500 strap. I have both because I second guessed whether the 9900lb would suffice.

I'm a newb to wheeling and recovery but this is my thinking, can someone with experience please contribute their experience and opinion?

And recovery strap IS NOT A BUNGEE :D

To clarify what I meant is:
You want a high work load on a recovery strap.
You want the work load on a winch extension strap to reflect the work it will do (single line or more lines with snatch blocks). Winching over rocks is pulling the weight of your truck (more or less), winching out of muck takes more pull to overcome suction.
Comparing both examples was an attempt to avoid confusion.

You should never attache anything to a winch line to make it longer. The only strap that should ever be used on a winch line - is a tree saver. And that - is most often used in combination with a snatch block.

Curious to know where you got that information from....(in red)

This is the product I am talking about and have two of, in the aformentioned load ratings:
    http://store.arbusa.com/ARB-Winch-Extension-Strap-17600-ARB725-P3623.aspx

Which I bought as an alternative to doing this (which I may do eventually but this seemed easier and safer):
    http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/77016-Winch-Extension-Making-your-own-a-tutorial

I bought it in addition to the obvious tree saver and rock rigging line in case I get stuck in an open area above treeline out here in the Sierras.

I didn't "get" the information from anywhere really, I was presenting a hypothetical scenario in which I am stuck in mud or very deep snow in an open area where the nearest anchor is say, 150' away. My 80' line would definitely benefit from, if not be completely useless without, an extension. If the anchor is say, 60' away and I want to use a snatch block, I could use an extension. Doesn't seem improbable out here in the high Sierras. The rest of what I stated is general research on winching.

Both straps will work for you. 9900 lbs on a single line, 17500 lbs when doubled using a snatchblock. I guess it depends on the scenario where you start pulling out your winchline.

I guess I'll return the 9900lb then, no point in carrying around two straps when one will serve both uses.

the more strap you have the better. i had a buddy get stuck and it took over 200' of strap and winch line to get him out.

I use to have 75' for 30k strap, 20' of chain, 2 snatch blocks and 100' of winch line on my rig.

If an anchor point is beyond your winch line capability, get yourself a PullPal.
