Me? probably not. I have a bunch of crap going on this year. I don't even know the dates but I could be in Jamaica at the time, building our house and/or in school. As of right now, I am just sticking to small trips in the NW.

I am considering this winch and a US Off-road front bumper. Can you update me on how you like the winch after having had it and hopefully used it a few times?

M8000 solenoid relocate. This position works with stock length cables. (I did need to extend that little 18ga ground wire)

I added an improvized plastic cover to protect the solenoid from water, since I had to cut a notch into the plastic cover to keep the cables from pressing against the radiator at this mount location.

Noob question: does the ground from the winch motor has to go directly to the battery? I can't just ground it to the vehicle frame?

Also, is a circuit breaker recommended or required for a winch?

Folks typically don't use a fuse or circuit breaker, since the max winch current is well to the good side of 400 amps and such breakers are expensive, bulky, and hard to find for automotive application.

Therefore, it's important to shield your winch cable so that vibration won't cause the insulation to wear through, shorting the unfused cable.

It's important to ground directly back to the battery, since amount of current that can be carried is determined by the cable size of the complete loop.

And the chassis ground cable back to the battery is a *much* smaller cable - like 10ga or something like that.

Not trying to thread jack, but if you had a choice between a Viper 10,000 pound Classic with Synthetic line, a Smittybilt XRC 9.5K with synthetic line, a Warn M8000 with steel cable (will replace with synthetic once I have the cash), or a Superwinch 8500 pound with steel cable (will replace with synthetic fairly quick)? Are they all good winches? The Warn is the most expensive for me, followed by the other three being almost all the same price. I know Warn is good but I also know they charge a bit for that name. You guys seem to know your stuff and I hope you can give me some opinions.

I'll only be using the winch maybe 2-3 times per year. This is my first winch. Is synthetic or steel better for a low rate of use application?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have an M8000 with synthetic. Great winch and as long as you clean your line somewhat regularly it'll work for you for awhile. I went with Warn because of their reputation and after reading a winch testing document where they tested 4 different companies, putting them through a few different challenges/tests. I wish I could find the link but the Warn inched out the competition in the end.

I like the Warn too. Have the M8000 converted to the 9.5 with gears, motor etc. replacements.

Look on CL and see if you can find a used one.

Okay guys, the Warn winch will cost me over $800 CAD for a steel cabled 8000 lbs winch. That's just a rip off off. I can get a Smittybilt 9.5K winch with synthetic line for that price to. This is available at the local Princess Auto for half of that price. Considering that I won't be using this Winch more than 2-3 times per year what are your thoughts on going with this Superwinch?

My half baked logic is that I can buy a High Point .45 cal and hope to never use it but, I choose to shoot Springfield, Sig and Kimber because I can depend on it :).
Your going to get what you pay for.
If that what the budget calls for than I would support it and am sure many have had no issues with them. I honestly couldn't do it.

Superwinch isn't a bad winch and that is actually a good price. I have a XRC8 from Smitty built that has been a solid functional winch for me and I personally would consider Superwinch a step up from mine.

You can get the 9500 with synthetic for less than $500 from Amazon, this is the one I will be going with when the time comes.

I can't argue with this logic.
