    Hello,

I'm going to embark on a road trip in July. I'm hoping to be off by July 10th or so. I will be leaving from Virginia and heading towards California. I have a few questions.

    1. What are some good places to write down to see? (I have many already, I just want opinions from people maybe already out west) :)

    2. Where would be some good off-roading spots? :p

    3. Any good places to stay? (i.e. Campgrounds, hotels, hostels, places)

    4. Essentials to bring on roadtrip?

If I've got any more questions, I'll ask. I'm just looking for outsider opinions and other information. Always good to be informed. I'm hoping to spend up to 2 to 3 months out on the road going west. No idea if it will actually last that long or not. We shall see. I know I'm bringing my mountain bike and longboard so...

I also know this is also a heck of a lot to ask, and probably not that safe, but places to crash could be helpful.

I drive to Arizona every winter and one place I think every American should see is Monument Valley Arizona. For a scenic drive, take I-70 thru Denver and the Rockies and just over into Utah, take Rt. 191 south thru Moab and on to 160 thru Monument Valley. The View hotel on the Navajo reservation is a terrific place to stay.

Likely the length of this trip will make me get to Arizona. I also hear that there are a great many mountain biking trails there.

Too bad you are starting a little late. If earlier you could have met up with me along 70 in Kansas.

Hilariously enough, I have a friend who lives out in Salina Kansas right off of route 70. I don't think they know I'll be possibly going through their town. Haha :plane:

If you plan on doing some 4x4 I highly recommend staying in Moab a few days, it's about the best 4x4 spot in the country. I would also run some roads in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, which isn't too far from Moab. 12000+ foot elevations and amazing scenery.

Thanks lots. I'll definitely look into that. Though I can't say I'm running a high enough budget to get tires that would be totally amazing for offroad. Then again, the stock "road" tires I have on my truck I've already taken through wet grass, steep hills, and deep ravines and no harm has come to the beauty.

I've discovered that Pandora radio is amazing on road trips. Nothing passes the time like George Carlin radio.

    Coming through Denver?

Good: Jump off I-70 nine miles after Limon and take 86 to I-25. You can either head North on I-25 or cross over and take 85 (Santa Fe) back to C470, and that back up to I-70. Not only do you skip the toll parts of C470, from where 85 hits the loop it's pretty much empty and scenic. It costs about 10 minutes on paper and you skip the entire mess of driving downtown through the city.

Better: Jump off at Limon and take 24 down to Colorado Springs, and pick up I-25 South. Take 115 to Canon City where it hits 50 which is a much nicer drive into Moab, and you can't go wrong no matter which way you go.

Best: Just keep going South on I-25 and hit Great Sand Dunes National park. Not only are the Dunes pretty amazing, but you can light 4x4 out the back and head for Medano Pass, the camping back there along the beaver ponds cannot be beat. (You could probably come in through Medano Pass too, basically into Alamosa instead of out of)

And unless you have Verizon you won't have Pandora much past Salina Kansas- or any reception again until Limon, and just forget using it out West. Speaking which, go ahead and hop off at Salina and head South into town to fill up- barely 3 miles off I-70 the gas is cheap and it's a cute little town. No friends there, but I always go.
