I'll use 4x4 in the rain when the puddles on the highway get to that point where you feel them slowing the front tires down and pushed them side to side when you hit them. 4wd allows the tires to cut and power through the water instead of deflecting.

4 wheel drive has no impact on how the tires cut thru water. All it does is deliver power to the fronts.

Not to drag this back up, but I came from the desert southwest and the slickness in the first 15mins or so of a rain storm had my butt cheeks puckered way worse than any of the snow I drove in during this last, albeit mild, Montana winter.
