IRON RANGE OHV PARK MEET-UP MINNESOTA

Anyone from the upper Midwest interested in heading to hit up the OHV park in Gilbert mn? Last time I was there we rolled our modified yamabuggy....lol but last I heard they were in the process of extending the park 3x it's original size of over 2500-3000 acres... So looking at maybe 9000 acres of exploration and rock climbing? Anyone know if they completed the addition?

Havent completed the expansion yet, and you should definitely join us (North Shore Wheelers 4x4 Club) this spring for our Open House event held there.

Where are you located? Our club goes to Gilbert about once a month.

 

Brainerd lakes area.. I gotta alot of mods yet to do.. But she's coming along.. I know one thing I need to do for sure is leafs and find a span wrench so I can turn up my front suspension... Drop my diff... When do you guys meet up?

If you plan on hitting up the IROVA park, i highly recommend sliders (if you haven't already added 'em), saved my panels so many times.

Haven't heard back about joining or any information on requirements

 

If you sent an email through the NSW website, he was having problems and didn't get my email for almost a month.

I know some of us are going up there Friday and Saturday night, staying at Sherwood Forest. Trail ride starts at 1000 on Saturday.

What's the vehicle requirements?

 

We're a club based on daily-driven offroad capable rigs. The Open House is aimed at people new to wheeling with vehicles that have little to no modifications (depending on vehicle type of course, I.E. a stock Tacoma is more capable than a stock Nissan anything, and a stock XJ,JK,TJ is more capable than a stock Tacoma... etc.) So, our requirements for the Open House are pretty simple. 4x4. recovery points front and rear (tacoma's stock front points are OK, and a hitch shackle out back is fine) and an understanding that taking your truck off road brings risks of potential damage, and only you are responsible for that. There's some more info in the Open House link on the site, give it a quick read.

Also, a positive attitude. We're out to have fun and share our knowledge of the park with people who may not have many opportunities to explore it on their own. If you like hanging out with us, we hope you'll keep in touch.

*Edit, now that you bring it up though, we should really make an official "requirements" section for next year...

I'm really glad I found this forum. I recently purchased a '14 Tacoma TRD OR and I'm hoping to gain some ORV experience. I located the Gilbert DNR facility on the Net but it provides very little info on whether they have more relaxed dirt trails for novices like me. Perhaps one of you would be so kind as to answer a few questions.

1. Does the Iron Range OHV Rec Area have simple dirt roads with decent scenery, for a semi-relaxing yet fun trip for my wife and I?
2. If so, are the trails clearly marked so that I don't stray onto a one-way trail to hell (rock climbs etc)?
3. Do these novice trails pose any risk to my truck?

If, based on my message above, you're thinking "Man this guy is either 90 years old or really lame," the latter would be correct. I'm simply hoping to dip a toe in the water here before jumping in, and trying not to be careless or impetuous with a $30,000 vehicle.
