Anyone know if gated forestry roads are or could be locked due to gov shut down? Headed to bald mountain off dinkey creek this weekend in Sierra national forest. Tried to call ranger station but no answer.

Most likely closed. They are putting more effort into closures than if they were open. Need us to feel the pain so we realize how much we "need" government.

exactly, parks is the key word. Around here the National FORESTS are open, just no one to do maintenance or open facilities(campsites, restrooms, etc.). The park rangers in one of the districts actually opened roads that are usually open for hunting season.

There is a distinction between a Park and Forest and I think the reason parks are closed and forests are open is because a park is there for conservation where a forest is there for people to actually use.

I would check around locally just to be safe but thats how its going out here in the George Washington National Forest and Shenandoah National Park

Thanks all! I totally get the difference between the Natl parks and Natl forest. Today the Ranger Station for this are now has a recording referencing the shut down.

I will wing it and hope the gate is not locked. My buddy works for Cal Fire and he is ringing the local station to see if they can confirm.

    Thanks again...out!

Good luck, I hope it works out for you. Keep in mind there will be no one out there to call for help, so be safe.

Just got confirmation from the captain at the local Cal Fire station that the trail is open and has even seen the ranger still patrolling (not sure with what $$$. Perhaps the love of the job?).

Did ME do that with Acadia? It was shut down and we had 48 hrs to leave Black woods. The rangers who were there weren't getting paid.

Congress too, whats to bad is they don't really shut down government they just shut down stuff regular people use so us mundanes feel the need and fear of them. I hope it stays shut down for another month, makes no difference.

Better wise up it is costing us 300 million a day right now if they don't come to their senses that figure will seem like pennies and will last for decades. Elections are coming in 2014 throw out your old tea bags they not much good the second time around.

Think about who is the Governor of Maine he would rather lose the tourist money than pay to keep it open. He is just a loony as the wing nuts in congress.
