Howdy everyone. I was all set to order a Tepui RTT only to discover that my SnugTop Supersport shell supposedly cannot handle the weight of the tent and two adults.

Is anyone on this thread running their RTT on a SnugTop shell that does not have the "sportsman's package reinforcement?" How about on the roof of the cab itself? Seems like there are a number of folks on here running their RTT on the top of their cab, but they're all double cabs, I have an access cab, anyone running a RTT on the top of their access cab? If so what feet/bars are you using.

I'm really trying to figure out a way to make this happen without having to sell my bed shell and getting a pack rack.

Any and all help is appreciated!!

Brian, I have an idea for you. The holes for the rails are laid out on a square so you can turn the rails the other direction (and still have the tent open off the side of the truck). You'd need to cut the length of the rails down, but it would work just fine. If you use the supplied Stainless Steel flat pieces to mount it, then you'll need longer bolts, or you could use some 2" conduit brackets instead to secure it to your Snugtop. I used some of those conduit brackets on mine for my Thule bars but they'd work great with the tent too.

Here's my old Snugtop (same model as yours) when I first put the load bars on. You can see the conduit brackets.

Edit: or you can redrill new holes if you want. the downside to that is you'd have a set of holes left over that could allow moisture into the tent through the base.

We tried just mounting the tent straight to the bars but every time the tent goes on and off of it, it scratches the pain on the bars from sliding it on. I could put a towel down on the bars but we just decided not to, and we didn't want to cut the rails just to avoid any sharp edges that we would create. I have the cross bars mounting with Thule clamps and it is solid so we will use that.

    Thanks though Adam!

I will have it on my snugtop. I was told by the dealer I got the topper from that my bars can support 300+ pounds easy. Every cross bar how ever is rated at 165 pounds, but I was told with a roof top tent it spreads out the weight so much to not worry about it.

BTW, I did an install on one of the new Tepui Autana Ruggedized tents last night. This was my first time seeing this new tent in person. I have a Ruggedized XL so I figured I new what to expect. I gotta say the Autana Ruggedized is a killer tent! All of you guys that ordered one during the sale, made an awesome choice. I know everyone thinks I'm biased since I sell them but I've seen and used a lot of different tents and I try to still be as honest as I can about all of them. The Autana Ruggedized, IMO, is the toughest and most versatile tent on the market. It made my decision a no-brainer. That is the tent that is going on my new Cruiser that I'm picking up next week.

You have the Rebel top, right? How long have you had the RTT on there? No problems with it shifting? Had it loaded with the tent and 2 good sized adults?

I can't get a straight answer from SnugTop. Their website says 165lb rating. Then I called and the first person I talked to said that the SuperSport has a 200lb rating, the second person I talked to said 300lb rating. I can't seem to get a straight answer from anyone there.

I'm not opposed to mounting mine on the cab to a Thule roof rack system for example, but I have the access cab and I'd just want to be sure I can get 30" of spacing between bars.

If I would have known it would be this difficult, I would have never bought the shell and would have just gone with the pack rack. I even told the dealer what I wanted to do with the shell and they said it would be fine... but not in writing of course.

Here is a little idea for guys that have aluminum bed racks, aluminum rails of sorts or just want a little better clamp style. I made these to help spread out the clamp pressure rather than the little flat bars that the tents come with.

I have the Snugtop xtr. I have had the tent up there before but not while driving yet. 99% of the time when you ask for a weight rating they give it where that is the rating for bouncing up and down the road going 70mph, not the static rating when you are still and camped. My friend has a yakima rack over his cab and he said that they told him 200lbs rating for the road, but at camp you can have 300-400 probably

You could do an exoskeleton type rack. Sandwich a quarter inch thick piece of angle between the shell a truck bed. Then, run 1"x2" box tubing up following the lines of the shell. Then, build a rack connecting the up rights above the shell. Now you can put your RTT on the rack supported by the truck bed, and you can remove you shell without taking the rack and RTT off if you want. That's what my son and are thinking about doing to his truck.
