Keep 2wd 2000 pre-runner or buy a new 4x4 Tacoma

Hey guys this is my first post and found Tacoma world through looking at the conversions that have been done and then looking at the new 2013 4x4 base Tacoma's. Should I keep my 2000 2wd or buy a new 4x4

If you haven't needed 4wd with the Prerunner, keep the truck if it's in good condition. Spend a bit of money to freshen up suspension, get it tuned up, or put the money in savings if you like.

If you need 4wd, are spending money left in right since it's a 14 year old truck, and have a job where you can make payments or pay one off, get a base 4x4.

Need a little more back story to give my best opinion.

 

Keep the 2000 till the wheels fall off, and save to buy a new 4x4 wity little to no financing.

 

Paying full cash is nice but it leaves you in a dangerous position. Since you say NEW 4x4 I suggest looking into 0% APR options. Most dealerships offer 0% interest for 5-6 years on brand new vehicles. Probably some stipulations but getting to keep your money like that with no interest is a great deal. Especially since the inflation rate is 3%, you're doing yourself a huge favor.

However, that is only if you choose to buy. I say find the true value (Not KBB, they told me 13000 for my 2007 PreRunner SR5 @90K miles, which is a few thousand too low) and see what it will be worth in a few years. Then you can decide whether trading now or later is better. I myself would hold off for a redesign, but that could take years. Also, if you end up buying a truck right before a redesign, it is worth a little less because it is no longer the latest body style.

Well.. the truck is in actually great condition.. I mean I get nervous sometimes thinking man when is something going to happen but it never does. Shes runs great. BUT...
I live in florida.. and in one month im moving to North Carolina. I really would like a 4wd to be able to do the stuff I want to do. I have a little over 13,000.00 cash if I sell my truck and put some cash with it. The trucks ive been looking at are here

and then also a 2013 white 2.7 4x4 access cab with 38,000 miles for 22,000.00

I mean.. should I just lift my truck and put in a limited slip differential .. and maybe a winch ? and ill be traveling back to florida here and there

What size cab do you need? Double cab or access? IMO access is prettier but I wasn't very impressed with the seating. Not that I expected full seats or anything, but they weren't comfy at all for passengers. The Double cab is almost required IMO if you're hauling family/friends around.

 

Just me but I would rather keep a 2wd truck as light as possible and not add much to it if you are going to wheel. Other than wheels and tires that is.

 

I just need the access cab. but im wondering if the 4wd 4 cyclinder will have enough power off road. I mean... I shouldn't have a problem right??

2010 v6 trd 4x4 with 50,000 miles

2013 v4 4x4 with 35,000 miles

both 22,000.00

the 4 banger wont have a problem off roading will it ?

 

I love my 2010 TRD OR it's 4x4 and V6 my only complaint is gas, but I drive with a lead foot. If you think you are going to tow I'd get V6.

 

If you are going to be wheeling and dont get a V6 you are going to be spending more money putting in gears to make it not feel gutless.

15,000 miles more for a V6 is peanuts and its probably at least an SR5 and you will get the luxuries that go with that package

 

No problems off-road, because you have low-range in the T-case. It might be too slow for your tastes in daily driving - second worst power-to-weight ratio of any vehicle in Toyota's lineup (between the Prius V minivan and the Scion iQ micro car).

 

the vision is getting a little more clear..
as long as the 4 cylinder will be able to climb, drive in soft sand, and do fine off road then that's what im going for. Im not going mudding in my brand new truck but I definitely wanna take it off road and not be worried about getting stuck all the time like I have to be in 2wd.
