I know you get what you pay for but I had a $1000 warn on my last truck and used it 3 times in 4 years. So to the question I am looking at the harbor freight badlands 9000 lb winch or the Smittybilt XRC-9.5 Gen2. Both have decent reviews and bout the same price. Just want to see what you guys are using or think

I would go with a Badlands 10x before the Smittybuilt. The Badlands is probably a bit slower line speed and it's heavy but every one of them that I have seen has been incredibly reliable. Not the case with the Smittybuilts ones. Brain Swearingen (Woody who owns/runs the IH8MUD forum) has been running a Badlands winch on his Land Cruiser for years now and it gets used a lot. That thing works perfect everytime. If I had a Smittybuilt I'd be nervous everytime I needed to use it wondering whether it was going to work or not. For "budget" winches, I'd go with the Badlands.
    .
I just ordered a ComeUp winch for my own truck. Not as inexpensive as the ones you listed but great winches and fully sealed and submersible.

Just one guys OPINION! since there are people on this board that seem to think that I think my OPINION is somehow gospel and anything contrary to it is dead wrong and stupid. Different stuff works for different people. But from my experience, I'll share my opinion from what I see first hand.

I think that could be because your responses / replies / comments are so well thought out, in such a way that one can tell there is wisdom behind your responses and choices.. I'm one of many that has appreciated your wisdom on this forum. Thank you

(sorry OP, didn't mean to threadjack)

I actually almost got a Badlands which after reading about the Moab Winchs in Hell test.

    http://www.moabjeeper.com/articles/g...?articleID=353

I know its a few years old but I was impressed. Then a really good deal on a well cared for M8000 appeared on CL and I got that instead.

Badlands all the way. My wife's uncle bought 2 for his 4runner turned rockcrawler. One is still sitting in the box waiting for the other to fail.

FWIW I have the 12,000lb one and it's always worked for me.

Get the wireless remote. It's handy

Haha. Perhaps. The people who think otherwise would beg to differ. At least that's what I suspect given the names I've been called. Oh well.

just wanted to add that warn has a rebate on right now (till end of April/2015). I got my VR10000 for $530 and free shipping then deduct the $80. Keeps a pretty reasonable price on a good name. Now I just have to hope it holds up as well as the m8000 do/did
