    whoot!! i had a blast!!

i have driven off-road plenty of times (and been stuck plenty of times), but i have never been off-roading with a 4x4 and with all the tacoma gadgets so i wanted an easy place to test everything out. so, i went to San Francisquito Canyon (west of Landcaster) on road 6N24 and 7N01. the trail could be done in 2 wheel drive, but i drove it all in 4 wheel drive Hi and Lo.

i am amazed at what a difference it is to drive with 4 wheel drive. the traction control systems on the tacoma are absolutely amazing. never once did any tire slip, drag, or skid. i was in complete control the entire time.... even while turing sharp corners while creeping over ruts and rocks at a 12-15% grade. the truck drives solid and stable.

i was able to engage the 4 wheel drive easily. there were never any problems shifting from 4Hi to 4Lo and back again. i was also able to engage all the other 4x4 systems except the rear locker. i was in 4Lo, at a stop, and in neutral, but it wouldnt engage... i dunno...
wow... DAC is fricken cool. you can be going down a 15% grade and it will creep you down the hill without you having to ride the brake... amazing!!

that trail does have some very sharp turns on it and i have no idea how a full size truck could maneuver around them without having to do a 3-4 point turn. i see so many full sized trucks with 6" lifts and i think to myself that they could not have gone on the simple trail that i just did... they just wouldnt fit. the tacoma is a perfect size.

i took with me my garmin edge that i use for bicycling and used it in the truck. its pretty cool to see some of the stats from the trip:
it shows the roads i took, the elevation, the elevation gains and losses, distance, time, average speed, and max speed. i forgot to turn it off and on at the trail heads, but it still gives you a good data...
ohh... and it looks like i burned over 2000 calories :)

(be sure to click on the ELEVATION tab at the bottom)

    welp... on to the pictures...

it was fricken hot out there

its hard to see how steep some of the climbs were, but they did get steep
    [IMG]

my wife thought that this looked cool :)

it was nice to be out of the city... we stopped to look at the view many times.

whoooo!!! rock on!! (man, i am getting fat.. i need to lose weight :) )

getting high enough for pine trees
    [IMG]

some narrow areas that a full size truck would have a hard time w/o scratching the truck to hell
    [IMG]

we made it to elizabeth lake
    [IMG]

not sure which lake this is
    [IMG]

    stop for the view
    [IMG]

this trail had tons of super steep side roads that i would never dare driving up
    [IMG]

yay... a nice dusting of dirt :)

this is how steep the trail is
    [IMG]

my wife had to pee. she would have killed me if i took this picture 5 seconds before :)

    you forgot something, honey :)

ugh... the drive home sucked. on the 405 from the 101 to the 90, it was stop and go traffic
    [IMG]

    whoo hoo... 11 mph
    [IMG]

damn... 35 degrees cooler at home

    whos your buddy?

well...we live in MDR only because we are getting a great deal on rent. there is no way we could afford the going rate for the apartments there. its way too expensive.

ya.. the campus is nice and the gym is pretty cool too. ohh.. and the food is only for those teams that are in the middle of a crunch. :)
