okay... TRAC is just different for you than it is for me in my truck... no worries. I just never see tires spinning like that and creating dust the way yours does. The main thing is you got across that rut. I would like to see you do it with TRAC off in H4, and see if you can't cross the rut then the TRAC added to the 4WD proves its value.

Dude, you don't even have 4WD... it's a Prerunner! My previous Taco was an '05, but a 4WD Off Road TRD Tacoma. So, it had a locking rear differential as the only traction aid after the 4WD. Unless you have a rear locker (which came with the Off Road TRDs) or a limited slip (which came with the Sport TRDs), all you got is an 'open' rear differential. Sorry!

Time to trade up!!! 2009 or newer Off Road TRD 4WD!

You are very lucky to have such a fine truck at 16... Enjoy it and take good care of it... and it will take good care of you! Change the oil every 3,000-5,000 miles!

I thought it wold be worthwhile to mention TRAC in 2WD vs Auto-LSD.

TRAC in 2WD will retard the ignition and brake spinning wheels. Auto-LSD, will NOT slow the ignition, and will just brake the spinning wheels. In this video I tried to accelerate three times with TRAC, then I disabled TRAC which enables Auto-LSD mode.

This test was performed in very loose sand.

Now that is a good example of how strong the LSD is in AUTO LSD over TRAC.

Last time I was in Borrego, I put it in 2WD on a sand road and played with the AUTO LSD... I got a pair of rooster tails... Just like having Posi-Traction or almost like rear locker on.

The sound inside you cabin is different from mine. Is that from your atrac brake booster? Ive been in a new 4runner with atrac and it sounded just like that, my trac doesnt sound like that at all.

mgrande, you have the SPORT and thus the 'vacuum break booster'. The OFF ROAD Tacomas of '09 + have A-TRAC and the 'hydraulic brake booster'. It also makes out AUTO LSD and TRAC (in H4) work better.

I think all you can do to improve traction and remain 'stock' ,is the YELLOW WIRE MOD. which will allow TRAC to work in L4. As it is now, all L4 has is Open Differentials for non-A-TRAC Tacomas.

Yeah I now the difference mechanically wise, but I wanted to make sure that the difference in brake boosters would cause a difference in sound heard inside the cabin.

Yes. I do have the hydraulic brake booster and something was making that sound. That sound however, was from TRAC in 2WD which was regulating the throttle through I believe some kind of ignition retarding process.

I perceive the sound from A-TRAC engaging as different than the TRAC in 2WD. I don't have any in-cab videos to share but to illustrate listen to these two A-TRAC videos where you can hear the skid control ECU increasing pressure via solenoid valves.

The sound is a very distinct mechanical sound with a steady cadence.

Listen 15-20 seconds A-TRAC(sorry for the wind noise)

    Listen at 12 seconds. A-TRAC

The A-TRAC does make a racket, no doubt... and the owner's manual clearly tells you that noise is normal. I never notice any special noise from TRAC working... and I couldn't hear anything specific to TRAC or A-TRAC that I also hear in my Tacoma in Crom's videos, sorry.

I can hear a slight hum when my trac kicks in, but you have to be listening for it.

I was about to write that I don't notice when TRAC engages in 4-Hi, but when I think about it, when I find a difficult obstacle to climb in 4-Hi, I think TRAC tries to work, but the truck will struggle, it doesn't feel right. As the operator of the vehicle, when this happens, I intuitively shift into 4Lo and climb over... I never really gave too much thought about it.

I hope to fully evaluate 4HI with TRAC sometime soon with more videos to share.

Thanks for all your posts in this thread and your videos too. I found them all to be very helpful. :)

Great... you will find that H4 is highly more able in TRAC than previous open differential Tacomas, which needed to use L4 to climb ... or deflate tires to cross deep sand. I am equally impressed with the new Off Road 4WD Tacomas in High Range (TRAC) as I am in Low Range (A-TRAC)!

TRAC in 4LO is super impressive too. The yellow wire mod kicks serious butt and i would attempt anything a ATRAC Tacoma will do. I will spin more but the fact is i will make it

I am not surprised and it is a nice mod. for you '09+ guys, without A-TRAC.
