I try to follow the races further down into baja every year.
I am looking into investing in a Garmin GPS and uploading the mexico maps to help navigate the desert and small towns too.

Just get the Baja California Almanac map book and an AAA Baja map, and you will be golden. One source: http://bajabooksandmaps.com

My co-pilot is not the best navigator when reading maps and gauging distance in kilometers. The GPS will be extra helpful to navigate at night as well

Has anyone on here ever raced in the Baja 1000 before?

Many people have... it began in 1967 as the NORRA Mexican 1000, replaced by the BSC Baja 1000 in 1973, no 1000 in 1974 after the BSC fiasco, SCORE International took over the 1000 in 1975 and has run it every year since.

If you are asking about Tacoma World members, sure a bunch I think... me included (I was a co-driver in the 1979 Baja 1000). :D

The Baja Almanac and the AAA map has distance in miles... I understand it is easier to have a GPS to guide you... but it must have Mexican roads included, and not many do... or not all the dirt roads.

Almost 1200 miles on the "peninsula run" this year. I'm getting extremely excited to go again this year as part of Canguro Racing. Even though I'm just part of the chase team Baja is an experience like no other. Can't wait!

Keep an eye on us in our Land Cruiser racing in the stock fullsize class against the Toyota Factory team in the new TRD Pro Tundra. Who will come out on top?

A couple of course changes... the race will go into El Rosario from the mesa just north of the military checkpoint (instead of the high road east from San Quintin and down to El Arenoso, which had avoiding El Rosario). The route out of San Ignacio will use dirt roads mostly and not the new paved road to the whale watching lagoon.

Have fun David and Manny! I have three book lectures this week, and just returned from a week-long Colorado Amtrak vacation... so no 1000 for me this year.

No need to chase, just find a good viewing spot, upwind, and make camp. The motorcycles have a half day lead over the rest... and the further from Ensenada you are, the more spread out the racers will be, giving you 12-48 hours of action! After watching the race, go do some exploring or visit one of the awesome beaches or historic sites Baja has to offer!
