Grilling season!

I figure a Tacoma forum is about as good a place as any to ask a grilling-related question, right?

I have a pretty nice 5-burner Ducane stainless propane grill. It works great, but it's gotten pretty nasty-looking over the 2 years I've owned it. I noticed this last night while I was cooking burgers for the family on Father's day.

I keep it covered... I'm talking about the grilling surface, burner covers, etc, that are looking rough.

What do y'all use to keep your grills looking good? Any magic solutions?

Thanks!

We have a standard weber ...and I can relate. This year I bought new flavorizer bars (or whatever they're called) - the old ones were rusted. Last year, I attacked the grill with our power washer. Removed everything, sprayed the inside, cleaned out all the buildup....and sprayed the cooking grate too - although, that didn't get as clean as I would've liked. I've used oven cleaner before - but that stuff is nasty and if you get any on ya, it'll eat a hole in your skin. I try to avoid using it....but it does work good.

I need a new cover soon!

I get after my grill with a wire brush. Before and after grilling. You don't want it too clean though, that's where the flavor comes from.

I have a cheap gas grill (char-broil), a camp gas grill (coleman), and a webber coal grill. I am addicted!

I clean all of them with wire brush before and after cooking (unless "it" was cooked with foil). I also take them out at the "end" of the season and soak them in soapy water for a few minutes and then scrub them off...

I don't really stop cooking at any point.

The wire brush seems to be the best thing to use. Before I start to cook I like to turn the flame all the way up and close the lid, this cooks off just about anything on the grill. After that i brush it off with a wire brush and them take a wet cloth and wipe off the grill. Good as new. Also try putting some cooking oil on the grill before you cook. It will help with the cleaning the next time you cook. I usually replace the heat shield and the burner every year or so. Its not that expensive and it keeps the heat consistent.

Thanks all!

I figured that I should have been spending more time with the wire brush, which I will start doing now. I'll be taking it apart and soaking it, then putting it back together and burning everything that remains.

Thanks again for the help!

What Death Valley said! After I heat the grill up, I wire brush it and then put a nice coat of cooking oil on the grill. I use a folded paper towel soaked on oil and my tongs and wipe that sucker down. Your food won't stick and clean up is a breeze!!
