" but i hate the idea of losing personal freedoms more."

on this issue, i do not. you causing others cancer, and the overall effect on society overrides the issue.

and i did not miss the point. i understand the issue related to GE's reasoning - however this discussion has expanded a bit to be a invididual rights versus protecting the greater society. sometimes one will outweigh the other, sometimes it won't. i don't simply choose one over the other without considering both sides.

i can assure you it is not. or if we do have one in place it is not enforced. first let me state that i am not racist and this is not a racist comment, but more of a cultural comment. in India, its the norm to not wear deodorant. we have quite a large indian population on site. some are in cubes along the walkway and when you walk by you get hit by a wall of BO. i've actually gagged walking behind someone before and had to turn off into a different hall. as i said, i'm not trying ot be a dick here, but if someone is wearing too much cologne or perfume, to the point where it is causing problems with co workers it should be addressed. similarly, if people are emitting other horrible odors, that should be addressed too.

    hmm. interesting debate here.

im suprised such a huge company would make such a huge movement to stop smoking.

its a very drastic change but a very positive one. smoking is a freedom but it is deadly to the smoker and the surronding him or her. for those who smoke and live to age 90 are extremly fortunate. my dads whole family died from cancer and i refuse even place them to my lips. i could see smoking being banned from all companys in the future. that wouuld be awesome. i dont see how you could compare smoking to fast food or any unhealthy habit. smoking is widely known to kill.... i can see a smoke free country! maybe thats a little too far but lol...... i approve for GE making such a bold decision.

i see why it would/will cause so much controversary. im excited to see how this plays out in the next 7 months

Are the designated smoking areas inside or outside?

Our plant went in that direction years ago. However, they haven't eliminated it completely. There are two gazebos located outside that people can smoke in - both of which are 'out of site' of customers (so to speak).

Just here recently, they've had signs all over the place for Smoking Cesssation (sp?) classes - free classes offered by the company.

Makes me wonder if these changes are coming down the pike.....
I don't smoke, so I don't care what they do.

i dunno man, fast food is widely known to kill too. heart disease and diabetes are both just as deadly as cancer. and fast food on a regular basis is just as much a bad habbit as smoking

but eating fast food wont faze the person you are eating next to. eating bad food is a personal hazard.

thats why designated smoking areas are acceptable.

Couldn't agree with you more about odors, I will see a pt for the first time & nearly gag from the smell of smoke on their clothes its unbearable. I can't imagine working next to that all day only to have them go out every few hours & "reload".

I think if it bothers you so bad find another job, don't see why it does you don't even smoke. As far a health care costs we all bear the burden of smokers health care costs, wether it be by higher premiums for our insurance plans or the stress they put on the medicare/medicaid systems.

I couldn't care less if people smoke as long as I don't have to pay for it.
