Kilimanjaro Summit or Everest Base Camp

Has anyone on here done either?

My girlfriend just broke up with me, so im starting to plan a trip for next year. both of these are on my life list, and one of them will be done by the end of next year.

Im hoping some people here have some more experience with this. I backpack and go hiking whenever i can, everything down here is less than 6,200 ft, but i go to colorado a few times a year and get up into the 14000s. I know i can do both of them physically, but im hoping someone has some insite on which i should do first, or some suggestions on which guide services to use.

I have been researching this for about 3 weeks, so i know a little about it, but the more info the better.

I gotta go with Everest.

My ex-girlfriend did Kilimanjaro, and while she raved about it, she still wishes she had done base camp instead.

I don't think you can go wrong with either. Kilimanjaro gives you the feeling of accomplishment and the beauty of Africa, while Everest will probably make you want to come back and climb the sucker. But there's something to be said for the pilgrimage through the ancient ruins with the flags waving and the smells of the teas on a road that has been travelled longer than most organized religions.

 

i think im leaning that way too, not sure though, i go back and forth on which one to do first. At some point im going to do both, just not sure the order

 

i say Everest. Not too many people can say they hiked to Everest's base camp.

How high is base camp? Are funds an issue, not sure what costs more. I have read about Everist and that it is $$$, but that was for the full journey

 

how much experiance do you have? have you been training for such an adventure?

i'd say maybe start my taking on mt whitney

i've climbed kilimanjaro and kenya when i was in high school

was a great experience and i would recommend it to anyone

(was my first climb btw)

 

Everest is $5200 including flight from atlanta to kathmandu, Kili is $4200 including flight. price isnt really an issue, im planning on traveling around the states to get some climbing in, although you really dont need it on either trek. I have plenty of backcountry experience to do both, altitude wise,14,2** is my highest, but i spend alot of time in colorado mountains and have never gotten the slightest bit sick.

 

Everest to attempt a summit is around 50k, base came is at 17,600 ft

its about a particularly disasterous year of everest expeditions. the author survived, many others did not.

 

yeah, i have been reading alot of climbing books, that was one, but also alot by ed viestrus, hes got some amazing books. ive been doing my research for a while, and the only thing that im finding out is that there are way more places i want to go. the annapurna circut is now on my list.....so ive gone from definitly doing kili, to maybe kili or EBC, to now kili, EBC, and the Annapurna circut.

Im thinking it will be Kili, just because it is 10 days shorter than the others.....but its basically the same price.......................i dont know what to do

 

Ed Viesturs just opened up a new Ediie Bauer flagship store near Seattle and did a meet-and-greet. I wanted to go so freakin' bad.

I've never been one to to be star-struck (since I work with professional athletes on a regular basis, it would be bad for professionalism) but Ed is one guy I would love to sit down and pick his brain.

 

Reviving this thread, but i decided on Kilimanjaro a few months back, and will be going October 10-24th. got all my gear ready and plane tickets bought. cant wait, gonna be kick ass

both are in the cars for sure, just was trying to figure out which to do first.

 

I would say summit over a base camp. You will want more if you aren't at the top.

I did Mt Whitney ( highest peak in continental US) last year, and doin it again this July

 

nice, I plan on doing whitney fairly soon, not sure when though. Also ive decided that for my 30th birthday 2.5 years away that i want to climb Mt. Aconcagua (highest peak in the world outside the Himalayas)
