Editing MP3s and WAV files to make a Ringtone...

Its time for a question that is completely unrelated to anything that this site has to do with by a moderator that should probably already know the answer, but is either too lazy or too lazy to figure it out on his own...

What do you use to edit a song that you have in MP3 format to make it into a ringtone for your mobile phone?

I just downloaded the debut album of Does It Offend You, Yeah?, and there are about 5 songs on here that would make wicked ringtones. The same is true of this commercial (perfect for my office )...

Sure do. I haven't had any issues in 2 years.

 

Does it take audio streamed from your computer, or do you have to upload files?

 

Not as far as I know. I've always used MP3's that I've had stored on my computer.

 

Yeah, the problem I am having with these new songs - I bought them on iTunes (yes, I'm lazy). So, they are m4p format (read - encrypted). I know how to get around this, but I didn't want to do that just to get a ringtone going.

Well, I will look into it more tomorrow (after working on some mods)...

Easiest way to get around it... Burn it to an Audio CD, then re-import it as a standard MP3 (192 bit rate). That way you can do whatever the hell you want with it.

I do this because I keep 8 copies of my personal media database, and iTunes will only allow you to authorize 5 computers. Sorry, I don't want to have to dick with authorizing and reauthorizing computers to get it on the 7 that I have (the 8th database is on my iPod). On top of that, I like having MP3 CD backups of everything, and I like listening to them randomly in my truck (or ripping them for my wife's 06' RAV4 which plays MP3 CDs from the factory).

 

Ya I use Audacity to do all that. I've yet to pay to get a ringtone...I just edit a song in audacity then transfet it to my phone via bluetooth using a program called BitPim (I have a LG Vx8300 on Vzw.)

Note: For Audacity to save as a mp3 you need a special codec...I'm pretty sure its the LAME audio codec. It will tell you whenever you click "Export as MP3."

If you have any questions about it you can ask me, as I've used this program a lot.

IIRC, ringtones cut out at 35 seconds, so it's pointless to use the extra memory for saving something longer.

 

Thanks for the info. I have to do some shopping for parts/supplies for mods today, but I will try to check it out when I get back home (sad - this is what I do when my wife goes out of town for the weekend).
