I was raised southern Baptist and am now Atheist. I generally let things go but if my mom or any other family member challenges me on my beliefs I will lay into them too about the absurdity of the bible, the previous gods and religions christianity is based upon and so forth. I never initiate an argument but I'll finish one with logic and facts.

ehhh he hasnt given me reasons really just links to videos he wants me to watch and such. For example he wanted me to watch the Ben Stein documentary "Expelled" and he said it showed both arguments pretty evenly which is of course complete B.S.

Sad thing is that he is a conspiracy nut job so if he only applied his skepticism he shows to our government and world events towards his religion, he would probably become atheist in about 20 minutes:D

Oh and I see you are from Texas.I listen to the podcasts of The Atheist Experience based out of Austin. Have you ever listened to it or seen it? I feel Matt Dillahunty represents us atheists well and is an excellent debator.

Amazing how some people can apply skepticism and reason to everything but their own beliefs, it's far too common.

He's awesome! I was born and raised in Austin and have actually run into him a few times. Very nice guy, fun to be around. I listen to his show and watch it on youtube, he really has a knack for taking someone's argument and destroying it in ways that can't be countered.

Ya he does.the funny thing is that I really haven't debated any believers since I deconverted so I'm not sure how I would compare but he is a good model to follow for sure.I'm sure being an atheist in the heart of the bible belt isn't easy for you guys so its good you have a strong community that is organized and can back you up

I don't even bother with that, unless it's family member challenging me. If it's anyone else I just tell them that not everyone needs a god to tell them to be a good person and try to leave it at that. The problem is you can't use facts and logic to argue with them. They don't see the irony of getting their morals from a book that says you should kill someone for working on a Sunday or that a virgin should marry her rapist. They've invented scriptures that they say free them from the laws of the old testament, which isn't true, Jeebus said all of his fathers laws have to be obeyed.

And they fail to see the downright asinine concept of sin. God was so angry at us for sinning that he sent himself to earth so he could kill himself all because a talking snake convinced a lady made out of a rib to eat a magic apple

You can't argue with people that believe that, there's nothing you can say. Nothing. So I just laugh at them :D

i will tell you this guys....Steve Jobs who founded Apple Computer became a non-believer when he was 13, but always felt that tug towards God. Towards the end of his life, he said he was about 50/50 on believing in His existance. But then on his death bed, it was said that the last words out of his mouth were "Oh wow, Oh wow, Oh wow"............its almost like he saw something that others didnt....makes you wonder

The problem I have with this is by saying "God" you mean the Judeo-Christian God. Is there anything to suggest the idea he was more open to the idea that Jesus died for his sins or that he subscribed to the tenets of Christianity? "God" is a pretty universal word, even Einstein threw the word around but he didn't believe in the Judeo-Christian God

Not to mention every nonbeliever celebrity that dies conveniently has a bed side conversion apparently.there is no evidence of what you claim just like there is no evidence of your god

Ok then my question to you would be why do you feel the need to attach your god to the end of these explanations when scientists can easily(or not so easily depending on your scientific literacy) explain these events without your god? It is kinda frustrating honestly to hear that at least somewhere in your mind you are a perfectly reasonable person with some scientific understanding but that you have been so indocrinated that you cannot even think of a reality without an all seeing sky daddy so you feel the compulsive need to throw a name on the end of these things...

    just my $.02 though.
