baptist- raised in church, left to do my own thing and the love of God brought me back. Now im youth minister and fill pulpits for preachers around the area. Surrandered my life three years ago and will start my masters of divinity next year. I believe that there is a God, and feel his love every day and see his hand in my life.

I'm still not sure what I'd call my belief but the one thing that is close is a Deist.

we all know how surveys can be misconstrued, but either way, I'm sure there is some truth to this, and as I've said time and again, Christians should be up to date on all religions and cults, and most of the time they just flat aren't. I'm not where I'd like to be.

I found this statement interesting.........."Not surprisingly, those who said they attended worship at least once a week and considered religion important in their lives often performed better on the overall survey."....the 'casual' religious person could really distort this type of survey, and vice-versa....to either side really........

anyway, good find hodgey, ya little :stirthepot:.....oh wait, that's me......

Man, you beat me to it.

I found it interesting that Atheists and Agnostics scored the highest in knowledge about religions other than their own.

It makes sense, since Atheists and Agnostics tend to have a higher education level, and it seems that those with more education -- regardless of religious views -- scored better on the tests.

But how can you be a Protestant and not know Martin Luther inspired the Protestant Reformation?

    Oh, and go Mormons!

but what scares me the most is the mixing of politics and religion. thomas jefferson said that the world would be a much better place with no organized religion in it. i agree 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000%

I find that that many people who talk the most about Christianity and evolution know very little about either.

I suppose I should answer the poll questions.

I was raised an evangelical protestant (Free Methodist) and as a young adult I served in Japan as a lay missionary for a Baptist denomination. Eventually I embarked on a course of study similar to that of a theological seminarian. I wanted to know more about theology so I read Paul Tillich and others. I wanted to know more about the New Testament so I read dozens of books in that area and became acquainted with the historical critical approach. In essence, I learned about the things most ordained ministers learn in seminary, but don't tell their congregations.

Many young seminarians lose their faith when exposed to the foundations of their religion. So did I and I am better for it. I no longer worship a lie. I don't believe in superstition or its organized version, religion.

And BTW, we did not 'descend' from apes. We share common ancestors.

Yeah. Pardon me for discussing religion on the 'What's your Religion' thread. What WAS I thinking? Or for discussing evolution only because it has been discussed ad naseum and with ignorance here.

I'll try to do better. BTW, I confess a certain pull in the direction of the Great Flying Spaghetti Monster, but I shall try to remain faithful to the scientific method.

DanT is bumping all the religion and evolution threads today?

It'll stew for 2 or 3 days before dying off again. Then someone else will bump the threads believing they can change people's belief systems on a web forum. Wash, rinse, repeat.

You'd have to be a moron to think you can change people's belief systems. You might even have to be a moron to think someone else thinks that. :)

But people do change their belief systems. I 'evolved' from a belief the Bible was the inspired word of God, to a belief that it was the word of men explaining their experience with God, to a belief there is likely no 'God' at all.

Some would call that a 'devolution' :) , but it certainly is change.

What I believe one can do is expose the ignorance and false beliefs that we all have as part of our foundation for any belief system. Whether one takes the new information and processes it honestly is his choice, not that of messenger.

...funny when anyone is dying, they ALL cry, "God help me!"

what I find really funny, are atheists. A faith so strong in not believing in any faith at all? :rimshot:
