There was one in LA near the Getty Museum, but that ones out. There's another around Fontana / Rancho Cucamonga.

LOS ANGELES – Crews advanced on a fire burning outside Los Angeles at the base of a soaring mountain early Friday, a day after snuffing out a blaze that erupted near the city's world-famous Getty museum.
The blaze 40 miles east of Los Angeles had chewed through 200 acres by Thursday night and was burning uphill and away from any nearby homes, said Jesse Estrada, a battalion chief with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
The flames, which were first reported at 2 p.m. Thursday north of the city of Upland, rapidly blackened slopes at the base of 10,064-foot Mount Baldy, which towers over the region. Containment was estimated at 30 percent.

Many areas of Southern California were under National Weather Service warnings of extreme fire danger until Saturday evening because of single-digit humidity and heat, but the Santa Ana winds were diminishing.
The 100-acre fire near the Getty Center began about 12:50 a.m. and burned up to the backyard patios of multimillion-dollar homes before it was extinguished seven hours later.
The fire started about two miles from the Getty on a steep slope on the west side of Sepulveda Pass, which carries the interstate through the rugged Santa Monica Mountains. Another wildfire that blew through Fontana and the canyons of Rancho Cucamonga, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, starting Wednesday was 90 percent contained Thursday, state fire officials said. No flames were visible at the scene of the 250-acre wildfire, authorities said.

Remember... what was 2002 or 2003 fires down here in So-Cal. I remember being at work towing aircraft around while wearing a mask, ESS goggles, and my headset not only for noise but if ya didn't you would have ash in your ears by the end of shift -- and this was down in Long Beach.

I'm dreading the day Montana torches off big time, we've got swaths of forest that have been decimated by mountain pine beetles and magnified by mild winters.
My folks live in a mountain valley area that's surrounded by national forest full of dead ponderosa and lodgepole pines.

Yeah when the 2003 fire i think it was, we could barely work in those conditions we had piles of ash next to us while we were working rolling in it i got up and said F*** this we had to keep our respirators on pretty much the whole day it sucked, and i do corrosion work.

Ooooo boy. That year wasn't as close for me, but for many friends it was. The largest single wildfire in CA history (Cedar Fire) missed me by a few miles.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cedar_Fire

Started 5 years ago tomorrow. And I'm saying this as it's only 6% humidity and windy out! Red flag warning and a hazardous weather watch for the area.

Yup, bad stuff all the way 'round...
and ya know it's bad enough when mother nature starts 'em, but it's worse yet when the fire bugs [arsonists] start them.

Move to Antartica... Not even car chases up there. Maybe a speeding penguin or two, but that's about it.

    :)

    yeah -- safe !!
I don't know what kinda safe are you looking for?
I mean fires can happen anywhere,
    earthquakes darn near anywhere,
floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, heat waves -- you may escape by living one area but get hit by another,
violent crime, drugs, etc. -- well you can decrease your odds, but you'll never eliminate them.
so what do you want to deal with the least?
