Help: My brother is a pot head, and I can't get him to stop

I know, I know. Its his choice. Most of the younger crowd here probably lights up and thinks its ok anyways, but he is pissing his money away, and my parents are supporting him (which blows my mind). He's wasting his life, and he is going to fuck up somewhere and hurt himself, or worse, someone else.

What can I do short of calling the cops on him when I know he is out smoking with his buds?

 

snatch up all his bud and burn it in the fire ring.... make sure you stand next to it.... jk. i have no idea man...

 

hey... at least its better than booze. I would much rather deal with some stoned out dude than a drunk, violent dude.... i am sure the police officers here would say the same thing.

 

steal his stash and send it to texas. But really it just like other smokes it has to be their choice no other options really work. Once a pack a day smoker now just a medicinal puffer when needed of other items.

 

Pray for him. Some things only God can do.

 

yeah he won't stop until he realizes what he's doing to himself. my cousin, during his first semester of college, became completely addicted to weed. he had spent all of his graduation money and the money he had earned over the summer on the stuff, it was sad. he had to go to rehab twice because he relapsed

 

x2 I dont wanna be that guy making BS comparisons, but the drunk tend to me more violent and less coherent then somebody high.


In my personal experience I have never seen a violent a high person, but being drunk compromises peoples ability to make decisions IMO.

Does he have a job? Failing a drug test could be a huge wake up call for him.

 

i feel for you, OP-- i have a friend that i've tried to convince to get off the shit.

for me, i dont care if its "less harmful" than alcohol, or whatever BS people try to spin it with, it doesnt change the fact that its ILLEGAL

 

When he gets sick and tired of being sick and tired maybe he will go to treatment but....
Maybe he doesn't think he has a problem either.
It doesn't help that your parents are enabling him.
Addiction is a tough rough road for all parties concerned.
It sounds like you love and care about your brother ....been there done that myself.
It took my family member going to jail on Easter at over 50 years old to change. Nothing we did would make him stop but he's turned his life around 8+ yrs substance free.
It may help you talking with a support group in your area for families like al-anon. I do not know if NA has the same setup, but it helped me understand fwiw.

 

Being an alcoholic and a stoner is similar, but the alchy can hold down a government job haha.

Not trying to argue with any one, but all my friends in that smoke have nothing now and nothing in their future. The rest of my friends (and myself) that just booze on weekends are much better off.

Also, good luck turning your brother around. Hopefully it won't take him making a mistake to realize his crappy lifestyle that he is living.

Do your best to not enable him. Yelling and screaming while making you feel better by venting some emotions will only alienate him further. I suspected my younger brother of making some less than ideal decisions, I simply refused to help him out. I would refuse when he would want rides to meet his friends or get picked up by me instead of our parents when he was out at night (he still lives at home while I was already moved out but still local). By simply reducing his options for concealment and increasing his risk of being caught he started to tone down a bit. That and a couple of stern but well timed talks might have helped to.
