Swimming lessons

How many of you know hot to swim and how many of you don't know how to swim? I am going to be taking swimming lessons here pretty soon. Yes, I don't know how to swim and I need to learn. This is more of a personal goal for myself. I have never had the courage to want to learn how to swim. I have always had a fear of the water. It has come to a time where I need to face my fears and do this hard things. You know if you don't do hard things in life you don't get yourself anywhere in life. Does anyone have technique?

I was a beach/lake/pool lifeguard and swimming instructor all thru high school and college...I was a varsity swimmer...I LOVE being in the water...and that is the best tip I can give you.

Taking lessons you are in a controlled, observed environment-RELAX and pay attention to what they are teaching you. NOT knowing how to swim is the dangerous part....Spending the time to learn and practice can and will save your life some day.

GOOD LUCK!!

i swim 11 practices a week and have been doing so since 8th grade, dont be afraid of it some of it has to come naturally. It feels weird as hell when you first start out but when you get the hang of it youll begin to find yourself more and more comfortable. dont be afraid of other people either its all part of the experience, having swum with olympic athletes I can tell you how nerve racking it can be, you just have to clear your mind get the basics down and go from there. Good luck man

^ This. Your body will naturally float, so relax when you're in the water and you'll be fine. Listen to the instructor, don't tense up, and let movements be fluid.

I was a varsity swimmer as well as an ocean lifeguard for 4 years. At the time I was USLA open water class A certified. Paid squat, but it was the best job I've ever had.

Enjoy your time in the water and the learning process will go MUCH faster. Good luck!

Swimming is great- I am a Scuba diver. When I was young I was around boats all the time. My parents used to just put a life jacket on us and throw us in the water. Sounds extreme, but the thing about swimming is getting over the fear of sinking. Once you learn that it takes very little effort not to sink the rest is just improving your technique.

I didnt know how to swim til my early teens when we got a pool at the house. I just stayed in it and practiced til I got it right and I love swimming, kayaking, anything on the water. EXCEPT for jumping off falls/cliffs.

Like others have said be calm when out there training, dont be worried as stated above you are in a safe controlled enviroment, nothing will happen to you and I am sure you will pick up on the techniques quickly cause there isnt really nothing to it. Best of luck to you.
