Just performed CPR

In my writing class today, about 9:15, the kid fainted. Everyone in the class at first started laughing thinking it was a joke. It wasn't.

Teacher yelled someone call 911. My phone was on my desk so I called the schools public safety service first knowing that they had EMTs, were closer to my building, and had a direct line to EMS.

I walked up to the kid looked, listened, felt for breathing and heartbeat. Nothing.

Figured I was doing it wrong so I did it again. Sadly I was right and instantly went into chest compressions. As I was doing my first compressions I called to a football player I knew and told him to go find and AED.

Chest compressions finish. No response. Rescue breaths. Back to chest compressions. Got through 7 and he started showing signs of life.

EMTs come running in. I read off the symptoms and they go to work. About 3 mins later EMS shows up and he leaves on a stretcher.

After emergency crews leave I just break down. There were a few claps and one kid made fun of me for "kissing" a guy. They stopped when they saw I was crying. I asked the teacher to be excused from class and she says yes. I sat outside the door for about 10 mins before walking back to my room. Everything was over by 9:30. I haven't been able to stop shaking since.

I think he's alright. I'm not sure. Won't find out until tomorrow.
Not a great start to my birthday.

great job on saving a life. bls before als. you did well. at least you didn't freeze. don't worry about those people make fun, they didnt realize the seriousness of the situation. all i have to say is congrats on actually doing something rather than standing by and doing nothing. this is coming from a 911 dispatcher and an emt/paramedic

 

Wow!! That's crazy! Good job on taking the initiative to conduct CPR while other kids were just laughing...that's rediculous. Hopefully he's ok and makes it.

pretty intense wasn't it? Props to you for jumping in and taking the lead when everyone else wanted to stand around with thumbs in asses....and to hell with buddy who made fun of you for "kissing" the one who was out, you definitely did the right thing!

CPR is a pretty rough thing to have to go through, you are destroying the body to save the life within. Good job thinking it through, using and going beyond your training.

Hey Nick you did everything absolutely by text book. Good work on your part buddy. As fast as you went into CPR, you probably just saved his life if he makes it that is. Dont worry about breaking down or what other people say to you. Trust me, I've been there and done that plenty of times and you'll never really get used to it. Great Work!! Oh and Happy Bday!!

 

As I'm sure you're aware, chest compressions will typically not restore function, but will preserve blood flow until paramedics arrive. However, your quick action paid off BIG. I'm certain he'll be more grateful to you, as any of us would.

Pertaining to you breaking down, I wouldn't worry about that at all. I'm sure your adrenaline was pumping and you were running on overdrive/instinct. After such an intense situation, you're likely to break down.

You did a great job and I only hope I would be as quick to action as you.
