Damn! Whenever I see big cats stalking/taking down prey it makes me a little nervous to go hunting in the forest alone. Thank god most all cougars have a natural fear of man

 

The scary thing is how many cougar are out there. And the fact that you never see them but they sure as hell see you. In 33 years here in Utah the only ones I have ever seen were 2 dead on the freeway. Then one day I was talking to a guy that hunts them and ever since I NEVER go in the mountains without a knife/gun anymore.

And wouldn't really say they fear us we just don't taste very good.

 

Vancouver Island , BC has the highest concentration of cougars in the world , most cougar attacks are on animals and kids , they rarely attack adults

I can't remember the exact statistic, but a biologist up here in WA gave a presentation and stated that every 24 hours you spend walking around in the forest, at least 1 cat has watched you with, or without you knowing.

I can imagine you guys down there in Utah have more big cats than we have here in Washington. There are a TON of them as is (ask the deer/elk), they're big and even more frightening, they move with incredible deadly silence

Cougar swim all the time , that's how they island hop up here , yes , lots of Black bear too , they also swim between islands

 

I believe it, I mean't I've never seen them swim (in photos/videos). How's your guys' deer/elk & grouse population with that many predators? A lot of coyotes too, or are the larger predators pretty much taken over?

 

I think the prey species population is pretty stable on Vancouver Island although the last couple cougar attacks on humans stated that the cats were undernourished so IDK

The small island I live on generally has no bear and usually very limited amounts ( 0 - 3 ) of cougar , so our deer population is over inflated

 

That'd make more sense if they're resorting to humans as prey. Perhaps juvenile cats being pushed out by bigger males/females in the area, that'd be my guess..

Sounds like a good place to live for guaranteed venison every year

Most people spend years exploring the backcountry and never see one. Those few lucky individuals who have seen a lion in the wild have witnessed one of North America's most impressive and powerful animals.

Mountain lions inhabit territory all across Utah. According to the Division of Wildlife Resources, the only place in Utah they're not found is in the salt flats west of the Great Salt Lake. Despite Utah's large cougar population, attacks on humans are rare here. The last mountain lion attack recorded in Utah occurred in 1997, in the Book Cliffs region southeast of Price. The situation was a unusual; a rancher was attacked while riding his horse. Examination of the lion after the attack revealed an emaciated, half-starved animal.

If you are attacked, fight back with any weapons you have available. Use rocks, sticks, even your bare hands if that's all you have. Playing dead won’t get you very far, since that’s probably what the mountain lion has in mind anyway. Similar to a black bear, the cougar will just think that you've become a free meal. Playing dead is only recommended for grizzly bear attacks. When it comes to mountain lion encounters, many fatalities have been averted simply because the victim fought. One story even reports a grandmother pulling a mountain lion off her grandson by the scruff of its neck!

Density estimates of 3 to 7 adult cougars per 100 square miles have been made in southern Alberta and 5 to 8 adult cougars per 100 square miles in the Diablo Mountains of California. Both habitats are characterized by good stalking cover and abundant prey. Lion densities in dryer desert climates seem to be lower. Linda Sweanor and Kenny Logan estimate only 2 adult cougars per 100 square miles in their New Mexico study area, which lies in the Chihuahuan Desert. Densities in southern Utah were even lower, at .5 to .8 adult cougars per 100 square miles, which was 30 percent lower than densities estimated elsewhere.
