I think the 90s expanded the music scene in all different directions. It is impossible to compare musicians from the 60s to those of the 90s because of the shear volume of different bands out there made it hard for one band to stay on top for very long. Music companies were snatching up bands with different sounds left and right hoping for the next big thing.
As far as influence you have to look at it like knocking over a stack of dominos. Sure the first domino is important but is it more important than the 2nd cause without the it, the 3rd domino wouldn't fall and so on and so forth.
Bands of today were influenced by the music they grew up listening to, which was influenced by the generation before that.....
BUT, all of this is just worthless internet babble and in the end we owe it all to (musically at least) to the first ape/caveman/biblical charater of your choice or alien who started beating a stick against a rock and shaking his booty or banging his head and throwing up horns.
