That just means that there is a new post in that thread since you've last visited.

The image for "you've posted in this thread" has the arrow like in this

 

<--this check on the 'home' page tells me I am "subscribed" to that thread. Am I missing something?

 

in vB (the type of message board software TW is running) the default setup is to auto subscribe you to thread you've posted in.

So yeah, that checkmark means that you've posted in that thread, as does the down arrow. You'll notice the down arrow to the left of the thread title, and the blue checkmark to the right of the thread title.
