The baggage weight of a Cessna 172-R Skyhawk is 120lbs. with a fuel capacity of 53 gal. The maximum gross weight of the aircraft is 2,450 lbs., including pilot, passengers, fuel and gear.

With, compared to, say a Boing 737, is like a fruit fly.

The other difference is that, yes, with a pilot's license, you can rent a Cessna -- but this is where airspaces come into play. You can go to East Bumfuck and climb into a Cessna, but try flying into Class C or B airspace without clearance and you'll be in for a surprise! (For those who don't know, guess which type of airspaces surround most major US cities...B & C!)

Furthermore, with a max cruising speed of 122 knots, and a never-exceed speed of 163 knots, it's not like you need an F-16 to close on a 172.

Finally, the targets of opportunity for a Cessna 172 with a max payload of 120lbs are minimal, to say the least. People get onto airliners with bombs to BLOW THEM UP AND KILL LOTS OF PEOPLE. Or to hijack it and use the plane itself as a weapon. You're not going to kill a lot of anything with a payload of 120lbs, and flying it into a building doesn't make a ton of sense, either. Look at when Cory Lidle crashed into a building in Manhattan. The building was fine, and most people had time to get out of the way of a slow-moving plane coming towards their window.

How many times have you be selected out for these searches??

Because by your logic personal application of these issues is all that matters.

Your vehicle is an extension of your property. An airplane is an interstate/international trasit device...That alone makes your police example usless.

Why would you NOT use available technology?? Any security measure/law is made...then tested by someone...upgraded/fixed and on and on while people try to figure out ways to beat the system. Sitting stagnant NOT trying to improve security is what will get people killed.

Again- Lets be clear- The word "groping" isn't correct here. If that happens it's not a gov't trained and sanction sexual assult...That's a dude or chick who is abusing their postion and needs to lose their job.

I agree there should be accountability for personnel who abuse their position.

These people are there to insure the security of passengers flying from their airport. Not to get jollies from a search.

Understand that we are in the military, with that comes a few thing including this. It isn't hearsay, just privliged information that you aren't privilege to.

I've been trained to do pat downs...and I do them neither blindly nor uncertainly. The person conducting the serach needs to have an understanding of what they are doing....

And again-Everyone is saying groping is sexual assualt and when you pull up the rest of the definition it says "to feel up, to fondle for sexual pleasure." So yeah-it is assult...but that's not why TSA agents are doing it.

Tally- I can't watch your video at work. No search technique I've ever learned involved cupping breasts. And again...Intent matters.

Enough times. One time in particular comes to mind. I was flying to Vegas, and was 'randomly selected' for thorough screening with my dad. There were about 10 of us screened 'randomly.' Upon further analysis, we were screened additionally because we all had one way flights to Vegas, not round trip. This was shortly after 9/11 when the National Guard patrolled the airports with over sized guns for close range combat. It was likely a good idea to search those with one-way flights. Extensively searching everyone is simply stupid and wasteful regardless of the method of searching extensively (pat downs = waste of time, x-ray = waste of money).

Personal privacy being disregarded under the guise of supposed 'airport safety' is fear mongering.

Because there is a clear connection between lobbyists, authoritarianism, and unnecessary searches. There is a reason this technology was so quickly deployed - companies that make it had a role in making sure the government was quick about it. Corruption at it's best. It likely is not safe until more years of analysis are done on it. It should be optional at best (re: metal detector/normal screening unless opting for x-ray), or forbidden until meaningful research is done on it. It is a waste of time to go through X-ray compared to metal detectors, and more radiation is something we do not need.

No matter how it is spun, it is invasive searching and I can guarantee you groping is and/or will be a problem. That will have great affect on our country - it will make our country look bad domestically and internationally, and it will cost us in the form of harassment lawsuits among other problems.

I think it has been proven that a bullet hole in the side of a plane will do nothing. But I still wouldn't want CHLs on my plane since a bullet to the fuel cells could possibly blow the plane to bits.

I have respect for the military, but I hope you are not comparing military searches to the TSA searches... at all

The TSA is a civilian agency, therefore what they find should be public knowledge [if requested] with some exceptions (national security issues).

It makes me laugh sometimes, because some of these people complaining of the "groping" would be the same people complaining if the TSA let someone through with something. Saying why did'nt they catch them! Am I right? Its ok, you can admit it. :)

I think what he was trying to say is that because of military security clearances, they are privy to information that the general public is not.

It was in response to the "heresy" (sic) comment earlier. Brunes and Kilted Chicken have access to information that is not available to public citizens, but unfortunately (for this discussion) cannot reveal that information because of classification requirements.

I would imagine much of that information falls under the "national security issues" you mention.

Wrong- Depressurization of an airplane cabin won't cause the movie quality explosisions...but it is an emergency situation. Lack of oxygen can kill you and even with supplemental oxygen it can cause health issues to be exaurbated.

Facts like that aren't important....But using the figment of imagination called security is fear mongering.

To everyone who says this invasion of privacy by our government is ok... at what point does it become not ok for you? Is there anything our government can do to you as a private traveling citizen that's not ok? When you answer this, don't just consider yourself. What about your family (your wife... your kids)? What level of humiliation/ invasion of privacy would you say is ok to subject them to before it reaches the point of not being ok?
