the fact is that you should not be drinking and driving AT ALL. you're 10 associates you know deserve to lose their license for a minimal of 5 years and that's being light in my opinion. I used to drink and drive a lot, but probably wouldn't have if i knew 10 other people that weren't getting their license back until i was on my way to start life on my own and get a career. younger people would think twice on being idiots and putting other people's lives in their hands, including their own. breathalizer tests should be maximum of .02 for any driver, and i know it's unfortunate but bars should be treated like pizza places. there should be delivery drivers (DD) for the towns to get people from point A to point B. I like finlands approach on intensive driver training in order to obtain your license, it would be nice to see the U.S. follow foot.

WAY TO HARSH MY ASS-Teenagers with DUIs shouldn't be allowed to drive for a VERY long time. You can't be responsible enuf to follow laws that not to drink underage and to not drink and drive-How are you supposed to be trusted to follow little laws like speed limits and not using your cell phone??

I know people that have gotten DUI's and I don't at all think this would be harsh. They put everyone at risk when they get out behind the wheel.

x2. The only thing that kept me from getting seriously injured or killed by a drunk driver coming off a highway at 70-80 mph was a light pole. I don't take too kindly to drunk drivers.

    BC Laws:

First time offence (over 80 mgms. of alcohol in 100 ml. of blood) carries a one-year suspension of driving privileges, and a fine of not less than $600.
Second time offence (over 80 mgms. of alcohol in 100 ml. of blood) carries a two-year suspension of driving privileges, and imprisonment for not less than 14 days.
Insurance premiums often rise dramatically, in some cases to $7,000 per year.
Also involved in a Crash - In BC, If you are convicted of impaired driving and you caused a crash, the cost of your vehicle insurance will increase. In addition, ICBC will not pay to repair or replace the vehicle. ICBC can also recover from you all costs associated with the crash.

    Good Rant !
Always better with a couple under the belt

On the lighter side of a serious subject....
Had a boss years ago, who's thought on 1st time DUI conviction was:
Court Order, at owner's expense, convicted would be sentenced to paint their Vehicle International Distress Orange.
The State would supply, Purple Reflective Plates.
At the end of the sentence (one to five years) the Owner could, at his own expense, repaint car.
Convicted could drive no other vehicle.
Convicted could not purchase a vehicle without painting it Orange
Convicted could not sell vehicle, painted Orange.

The roads would be very bright, with all the Orange vehicles, but you'd watch 'em

That's a pretty good idea. I would definitely open up an auto paint shop if this ever came into affect. I would make so much money.

What i took from this is that, we are letting cars take the blame for bad driving. And i agree, there are plenty of ways to counter-act a mistake a vehicle can make. But at the same time, some things just cannot be controlled.

Me being 18 i disagree with the age limit, its biased i know.. but driving is a major part of my life, cruising with friends, car meets, working on cars.. if i didnt have that in highschool, idk what i would do.. possibly drugs, who knows. Truck = anti drug haha

But i hope we learn to control our cars and stop blaming the cars for every little thing.

This is the one thing I disagree on. It's called a speed LIMIT, meaning that's the fastest you can legally go. Putting a fine on going under the LIMIT is pretty much encouraging speeding. And what if there's ice on the road? Do you really want to be driving 70 mph on the interstate over a layer of ice? I sure as hell don't.

I agree with everthing. But the age part. I am 18 almost 19 never been in a wreck or pulled over. I am probably one of a few exceptions, but there should be a real test to determine if someone is ready at 16. I know there are way to many drivers at 16. I really pisses me off when someone can readily admit they suck at driving but will do it all day long and has about 4 accidents in 6 months. Think about this. You will only hand the keys to someone the same day he can give his life for this country.

well being an 18 year old, ill happily chime in :D

most kids my age with licenses suck at driving. i like to think of myself as a pretty good driver (even my boss says so :) though i admit i make mistakes) but i cringe leaving the parking lot after school as kids fly around my precious truck and cut through spaces and such and generally not pay attention. i know plenty who drink and drive including my best friend even though ive told him to call me and ill get him, anytime, anywhere. the only time he called i was a state away at 1AM and already on the highway by the time another friend said he would drive.

i think a big part of driving like idiots is there are few consequences. besides the legal aspect, very few kids i know have to pay for a car, insurance, maintence and gas so if they wreck the car, their parents buy them a new one. ive had to buy all these, not because my parents cant afford to, but because they want me to learn. i drive cautiously and at the speed limit because i cant afford to pay for extra gas, speeding tickets, or more insurance. i take pride in my vehicle and want it to look as best as possible so i go slowly in parking lots, on side streets and through road hazards.

opposite side: my girlfriends sister is 20 something, works 4 hours a week, steals from her family and drives all over creation for drugs and such. her parents bought her the car when she was 16, insure it (even now) and give her $3 at a time for gas. they tow her when it breaks down and fix it (her dad is a very good sunday mechanic), bring her gas when it dies and keep it running. if she had to pay for anything, hopefully itd get her to drive safer.

as far as laws go, at 16, everyone must pass a written exam and is then licensed to drive with a certified instructor. they then must do 10 hours of driving on a closed course which includes lights, stop signs, merging onto highways, tight turns, the works. then they must do another 10 hours on a real road with an instructor and take a driving course concurrently. this grants them a supervised license in which they can drive with a parent or instructor only. at 18, they must take a road test that is no less than an hour long which includes actual driving with actual other people (my test was in a deserted industrial park and lasted all of 10 min). the instructor can fail you for infractions and poor road etiquette and then theres a 6 month waiting period to try again.

insurance should go down significantly for taking advanced driving courses (that are pass/fail, not just a fun activity), maintenance courses, retaking the license exam every year, and a system should be set up so if a police officer sees a good driving practice, it can be entered into a system that gives a discount of like $20 each time.

Drivers who get a DUI must put giant reflective orange strips on all 4 sides of their car and fly a small orange flag off their roof at their expense after losing their license for 6 months. a second offense or failure to have the strips would be a permanent loss of license. everyone deserves a second chance, but not a third.

well that got long. this is just a very passionate topic for me haha. again, these are all my suggestions

As far as I know, it's still 80 mgms/100mL, BUT.... 50 mgms/100mL results in a 3-30 day driving ban, impoundment, fines and on the third offense, an ignition interlock.

I fully agree. Driving is a PRIVLIGE not a right and people have ZERO drivers training for the most part.

I also EARNED a German drivers license. I hold 4 engineering technician certifications through NICET and the German license was the hardest test I have ever gone through.
I also got to take driving courses through Porsche and BMW and they were a blast. I did learn a lot about vehicle control and recovery in all three courses.
