Possible daily driver 98 Corolla - Timing chain broke.

    My parents just gave me their work car. Its a 98 corolla and the timing chain bit the dust on the highway. I would think even with a full motor swap I'd be in for less than a grand? Anyone have any experience here?

    4 cylinder. I didnt know there were options. Its an automatic too.

    Yes, but the FE and GE are different headwise.

    Everything I have read suggests that it is a NON-inteference engine. This means you should be able to return the timing back to TDC and slap a new chain in, barring and other damage to the sprockets have occurred.

    I had a timing chain go on a 94 Camry. They put it back together with no major problems. Not really sure which motor it was, but it was a four cylinder.

    Well I had no idea they were non-interference. They did take the car to a garage and a mechanic that is one of their tenants said the motor wasn't worth fixing. Something about the cam sprocket but this was just what my mom told me and she doesn't really have a clue. I guess Ill just have to tear into it and find out. I'm ok with swapping a new motor in. Im actually kinda stoked since I've never completely replaced a motor I think it will be a good learning experience. I've done just about everything else on a car. I found a motor pretty local for 500 with a 30-day. Its people I've dealt with before and they have always treated me right.

    There's nothing wrong with that at all. You coudl keep the old one and see if it really is worth repairing.
