Do all three. His and hers and joint.

Set a % of your incomes to put into the Joint account and use it for things like rent, utilities, food or major joint purchases. When you have any extra in the his and hers accounts you can add a bonus to the joint.

If he has a car payment and the car is in his name pay it out of the his account. If she has a credit card in her name... she pays out of her checking. (for example).

Separate until you put a ring on that finger and she has a job which provides a steady cash flow into the account.

SEPARATE until you're married, and even then, I keep a separate one, but the wife knows about it...it's money I made doing side jobs or anything else not related to my regular 9-5.

The pole says it all! Keep them separate! I made the mistake of going joint and after 10+ overdrawn fees, we now have separate accounts and haven't had any money mishaps since. We each have our own spending money now, and no stupid arguements.

And we've been married for almost 3 years now, dated for a year before that. I've read many posts that say keep your spending accounts separate and have a joint account for bills....This works perfectly!

Separate while your girlfriend, wife, and divorced. if you decide to get married though, joint for bills, separate for everything else.

+1 sounds like she's trying to control you to calm her insecurities. if she's pushing hard then she's gonna push harder and harder and make life miserable. controlling people take the happiness out of life.

Separate everything, no joint. I pay all the bills, and at the end of the month, she writes me a check for her % of the big bills, (mortgage, taxes, house insurance). This % is based on her part of the gross income for the house, and works out to be about 40% for her. We split the rest of the bills down the middle. Signed a prenup before we get married, all assets are protected. I'll take care of her while she's with me, but not for a second if she's not. Let's just say I'm a HUGE believer in women's lib....

Seperate cuts down on fights & overdraws. My first marriage I had a joint. We bounced checks all over the place.

My 2nd marriage we have seperate accounts. We split the bills. Bills are paid, we both have money to get us through to the next payday. No fights, no overdrafts. Best way to go.

Other option: Have a joint account for bills & each of you have a separate acct. The joint account is the house money that each of you add to each payday. This is for bills , groceries, & house expenses.

I think you should definitely get the OFF Road. Seems like you use it a good deal off road so the OR with the locker will suit your needs.

My wife and I each have our own accounts. I suck at paying bills so I direct deposit my share (which is > 50%) directly into her account that covers all of our bills. She take on the responsibility of getting the bills paid and groceries purchased, etc. which I am grateful for. I'll always pay if we go out and for our baby but when I'm short of cash or don't have my wallet she never has a problem paying.

As everybody here has said - don't get a joint account with a GF. Things my be awesome right now but who hasn't seen somebody get screwed over in a similar situation? You need to ask yourself, 'what is the reason to do this?' If it is to keep the GF happy, it is absolutely not a good reason. You have long-time women members of this forum who feel a joint account would be a bad idea.

Who makes more $$? If you're broke and she makes the $$, GO FOR IT!

If you live together, and plan on doing so indefinitely ;), then joint is a great way to reduce banking headaches. I get groceries, house supplies, furniture, pay rent, have the same car insurance, share a motorcycle, etc. with my girlfriend, so having a joint account makes it easier to split stuff up.

We both still have separate accounts for my mods, and her girly junk, but it makes it easy to allocate money for the living essentials by sticking it in the joint account - online transfers are easy.

I am going through this exact thing right now with my other half. She added me to her credit union and I changed my work direct deposit to go in her account. I would say do a good budget first and see what you two are spending. If your budget is razor-thin, then you will almost certainly overdraw. If you have extra money then it shouldn't be a problem.

The point is, you figure this sort of thing out now BEFORE you get married. A wedding and a divorce cost a whole lot more than a few overdrawn transactions. She and I have fought about it as she's a spender and I am a saver/debt payer. Our ability to compromise and meet in the middle on how we can both enjoy life and plan for the future is a key element of the relationship. If you find out that you and your girlfriend are polar opposites when it comes to money then it may not work in the long term. One will always be resenting the other.
