Thought you folks might like this new show "Nightwatch" by Dick Wolf on A&E premiering Jan 22. It follows NOLA Paramedics, Police, and Firemen. There are a few videos already up on the website: http://www.aetv.com/nightwatch

    Boots?

I just started EMT training. and I have to have a basic uniform. I got some pants, now I need boots. I thought my old Army boots would work, but after 15 years in the closet... well, they won't work.

I hate to say I am looking for something "cheap", I hate that word. I want something that is going to last when I get hired on with someone BUT not break the bank (I was recently laid off).

So, what do you wear? What do you like about them? What do you hate them about?

I'am a Professional skier and yesterday i boosted a big wind lip landed back seat and heard a pop in my knee. I have had expierence with a torn ACL a few years back. I got up and skied away. I put weight on it and it felt fine, its a llittle sore today, but i cant really go see someone at the moment, so thought maybe someone here could help me out on what has happend. Like i said its just sore today and i can ski on it as well as walk. Just very curious on what happened?
    Thanks.

Either Danner boots or Romeo's (made by Georgia boots). Romeo's are nice, comfortable slip on shoes.

Knee is a joint like any other and it can "Crack" (Like your knuckles). I can do it any time I like so that might be what happened. If there's no acute pain I'd say you're fine. If there is, then I'd hazard you tore a Ligament or Tendon. (I've done that too and it fucking hurts.)

all the PAs in cali say to get your clinical hours up. its more important than GPA some say so i have 6000 hrs on a bls rig. The AEMT is sweet because you can start lines (cali scope at least) but you are fine the an EMTB if you just want to get your hours in with school. I am one semester away from applying

    That's what I heard as well. I has a bs w/a 3.69gpa.

I think I want to get my paramedic license and find a job in a big city. All the job postings I see are asking for paramedics.

I've been toying with the idea of joining the national guard for the actual pa schooling, but we will see. Depends on a few things

You're welcome. As always, getting checked by a Doctor if it persists or doesn't "feel right". You'll be the best judge of what does and doesn't feel right. :)

I asked this on a Facebook group what are your thoughts?

By nature our profession is a reactive one, we react when something goes wrong. Sometimes the "emergency" can be prevented whether it is medical or traumatic. The MVA at 2am could have been prevented if the driver didn't decide to send a text while driving. The COPD patient could have been prevented if he didn't smoke 3 packs a day for 35 years. While we will always have to be reactive,my question is should we work harder on prevention?

I'm no medic, but my answer is "yes," as a society. Too many believe that it won't happen to them, though, so they continue to do what they've done even if bad for them.

The more you restrict the actions of others the more back last you will get. It's definitely a double edged sword.

Community medicine is in the future. It is coming into some communities and prevention is a huge part of our job. So is education. Educating the patient and family on meds, diagnosis, etc

I think he's talking about education rather than laws, though. Laws would get backlash, but education is part of curriculum, either in school or in commercials between shows, for example.

There are many things I think we as a society need to start teaching. This can be done without restricting our human rights. People know enough about the dangers of smoking, it's time to focus of teaching every high school kid CPR and basic wound treatment. While they are at it, maybe teach them how to balance a check book or what compound interest means.
