I know I'm a hill jack hoosier but what does a red turn arrow mean? Ive been well out of my state but never to one that has a red turn arrow.

It's for the turn-only lane. To differentiate it from the normal lights for the rest of the lanes. In case someone were stupid enough to see one of the lights for the lanes to the right change to green and go. Hey, if they had to do, somewhere someone wasn't smart enough to figure it out.

It's a guess anyway.... lol Looking closer, it looks like 2 turn only lanes separated from the rest of traffic with a barrier.... Maybe it's for the morons staring at the light forgetting they're supposed to be turning left?

I've seen colored arrows before, but normally they are on "normal" red lights and just indicate when it's ok for a left-turn-only lane to go. Like they will turn green while the rest are red or vice versa. Although, the ones around here aren't separated by any sort of barrier to physically divide the traffic.

 

i hope you guys are joking about the turn arrows lol.

at larger intersections you will have 2 sets of lights. One for people going straight and one for people turning left. If two opposing lanes of left turners have cars, then after the cross traffic stops the left turners will go and the people going straight will have a red. Once all the lefters go, the red arrow is put up and the people going straight get the green. There is no yielding for the left turners then since they have a red arrow and have to stop.

You should see how the city of chicago is setup. 99% of the time there are no left turn lanes or arrows. Or...if there is a left turn lane, you cant turn left unless you have a green arrow only- there is no red arrows on some of the lights- only green arrow, green full, yellow full and red full. you always have to be reading the signs so you know what the hell is going on. In the suburbs you get the left turn lanes and dedicated left turn lights.

 

That thing is hideous.
