traveling/on the trail with a small dog?

Hey Guys and gals
Just wondering what is the best way to travel with a pup onboard? Wife and I are taking a small weekend get away and will be camping...but this is our first pup and I am not sure if my wife can stand holding the puppy in her lap the whole time while wheeling?
We will be in my FJ and have the rear cargo area...but She will slide all over if we just leave her back there. Very small pup, I would say 8 lbs at most right now.
I was thinking about getting one of those small travel kennels and strapping it in the back seat(folded down/flat) with the seat belt and tie downs?
kind of lost at this point and open to any ideas or suggestions anyone may have.

I've got a bigger dog and he's loose in the back seat of my double cab when I travel. Either use a travel kennel or let the pup loose in the cargo area. Just make sure there's nothing big back there that can get loose and crush the pup. (Does the FJ cargo area have a rubber floor or something the pup has solid traction on?)

EDIT: Some animals get car sick when traveling if let loose so it's best to start off with a travel kennel in my opinion. We did that with our dog when he was a pup. Once we knew he traveled well and could be trusted, we stopped using the kennel.

strapped here? between the two floor tie downs? Just want to make sure the pup will be safe with all the rocking back and forth. I will probably squeeze her softy bed in there to make it a little more comfortable?



next time getting a large breed dog that will be happy in the cargo area with the back wondow open

 

i always take an old sheet kinda thick one and wrap the bottom portion of the rear seat with it. let them lay on it i have small dogs as well keeps them from sliding around on the leather. also cheap

 

Perfect set-up for a small dog and the bed will be more comfortable for her/him as long as it's not too hot. The rocking shouldn't bother him/her in the kennel, they've got no where to go as long as the kennel is secured.
