i skimmed all these posts but didn't read them all in depth so i apologize if im late saying this, but ya'll are all killing him. the notion that the driver is drunk is not a factor, because as a emergency responder you use no judgement or personal opinion. the reason i said you all are killing him is because i didn't see anything about compression pants. taking a steering wheel out of someones legs or stomach that's been there longer than 15-20 minutes and they can die on the spot.

Our crew had to unbolt a tractor trailer seat one time. His arm or leg (can't remember which) was pinned under it.

M.A.S.T. trousers are no longer carried on EMS units down here. They were taken off the trucks a few years ago. The OR's were killing the patients by ripping the trousers off and bottoming the patients B/P out. Amazing how something that really helped was taken off because of some people that can't take the time to learn to use them. In a situation like you are stating then IV's should of already been in place.

im pretty sure we still have them. im not EMS or paramedic, but i've been a volunteer fireman for 7 yearsish. i know ive known of two instances, one of being a guy i went to high school with where he was sitting there talking with a steering wheel in his belly and they took it off and he died right then. one guy on my fire department saw it happened before, really tore him up for a while. . . i would agree to have have iv's, blockers and and devib on spot before taking the pants off. . .still my statement is still valid.

edit: though thanks for that. that's really interesting, didn't know about that protocol in some areas. really is wild as you said.

Yep...same here. I've heard "talk" of them coming back, but it hasn't happened yet.

yea they took the trousers off our trucks awhile back.
but get this. today we did our hands on part of the class.

we had a dodge neon. laying upside down on its roof.
took out the back windshield, then cut out the truck and back of the seat. then he had us pop the doors off. then made a relief cut just before the B post on both sides. then. chained up the the rear axles to a set of spreaders and a winch. and when u started pulling on the chains the ass end literally rose up in the air and he had has fold the car in on itself. he then explains how much more room we have? but to me. if uve already got the back doors off and u have made entry thru the rear. why cant u just cut the seats and out u go with ur patient thru the back? saves alota time and man power IMO

Stabilizing a vehicle on its top....this is what we have/use. These things work great. With a vehicle on it's top, you can actually lift the car off the ground and be able to cut the top off the car. Check out some of the "in action" pics.

Of course we do. Each time every time. We just get really good at keeping it to ourselves. And when it comes to Drunk Drivers...yeah...fack'em. Don't worry, I'll make sure they have enough large bore IVs in sensitive area's to keep them alive. Besides, if their legs are pinned how do you propose to put MAST pants on them just out of curiosity?

We haven't had them on our trucks for over 6 years.

interesting! Never seen that done before.
man... those stabilizer bars are sketchy as shit! Ive seen a few of the feet slip out (much like the hi lift jacks) and make the other bar slip when they had workers inside the vehicle. That was a shit your pants moment.

i don't know, ive never used them. the one's we were trained on were the types of things that are a velcrow type of deal that you strap around them while they're in the seat and then suck them tight before you unpin them. i know we didn't have the practice person get out of the car and do a skinny jean shake into them, they got in the car and we strapped them around their legs, which i thought was the whole point. but like i said, im FD, not ems or paramedic, so its not my specialty. ive just always been trained never to cut a steering wheel out of the stomach because the reasons we already know.

If they're gonna bleed out like that they're gonna bleed. Large bore IV, trendelenburg position and have the Flight Medics standing by or even better landed and waiting.
