    You scan/take its picture with your smartphone, it automatically sends a hyperlink through your browser and takes you to a webpage/advertisement. Some smartphone OS's require you to have a 3rd party program such as "barcode scanner" to get the hyperlink.

    You can get a scan app at the android market or i tunes.
    Scans stuff like groceries and shows you the lowest prices in town to compare. It's actually pretty useful.

    And yes, it is the mark of the beast.
