Going to Vegas...should i drive?

Going to vegas this coming March, im considering driving out there just for shits and giggles, i think it would be awesome to see that much of the US that I have only seen from a plane. Things to consider, its a company trip, i will have a free hotel in vegas as well as a free plane ticket if i want. Seems like it would be a pretty fun trip. I would be going from Baltimore MD, has anyone ever done something similar? How many days do you think I should plan on to get out there? Google maps says 2400 miles, 1 day 15 hours.....thoughts?

If you are going by yourself I would definitely not do it, is this your first time to Vegas? I would take advantage of the plane now and do the road trip with a few buddies later

thought about doing the same. but really need a lot of time to stop and enjoy everything. would stink to just haul ass through every town to make it to vegas in 4 days. take the plane this time. do the drive when you retire and time and deadline mean nothing. good luck keep us posted

haha all very true. Dont care at all about the miles on th truck. I could probably get the company to pay for gas up to the price of the plane ticket. Yes first time in vegas, and it would suck to just fly thru and not have time to stop and see things, i think this is the biggest draw back. How boring is the ride? theres got to be some cool stuff to see. I enjoy driving so i dont think i would mind it. It would kill alot of time....decisions decisions

I drove all the way from Cali to Maryland through the Southern States, it was a blast. You seem like you really want to go, so just do it! Head out as many days in advance as you can so you can enjoy It!! Lots of cool stuff see no matter which way you go I'm sure

I moved from PA to the Vegas area and drove out. Took about 4 days (had the dog with me so had to make frequent pee stops). My suggestion would be to fly, especially since your company is paying for it.

4 days really? I have driven cross country San Diego to Virginia in 2 days as the only driver the wife navigated.
In your case I would take the free ticket & fly. Save the road trip for a vacation when you can stop & check out some of the stuff on the way.
And if you don't bring your Taco you can't sign the title over to a casino.

Dooode. Take the ticket and fly. It's not worth the time on the road. You'll only be seeing things from the road, unless you take extra time off work before the trip so that you can actually see landmarks and notable locations.

Plus there is the issue of driving back. You don't want to take 3 days after the trip and drive back when your tired, hung over, and all you want to do is get home.

Also, although google maps gives you an ETA, it doesn't take into account:fuel stops, food stops, rest breaks, and occasional detours.

When I drive to Portland, OR from Los Angeles, CA, Google maps says a touch over 15 hrs. When I only stop for fuel (hit the restroom while fueling), eat on the road, and miss traffic completely for that 1000 miles taking the most direct route, it takes over 18 hrs.

I say drive it. Just make sure you take the time to stop and see stuff. I have driven from Reno, NV to Bowling Green, KY and back twice for Diesel Power Challenge. We were time crunched, and didnt stop for anything but fuel, and while getting fuel we got food. That was lame, but I would really like to drive from here to the east coast sometime and take my time, just because. If you got the time and the cash, do it. When else are you going to have this kind of excuse to travel the country.

Take the paid plane ticket and spend a few extra days in Vegas. Taking the time to enjoy the drive over and sight see and then working in Vegas and then having to drive back...Just seems like an overload trip to me.
Fly over, work for a couple days, then take a couple days off, enjoy Sin City, and then fly home...Seems like a better deal to me.

March could be very interesting going through the rocky mountains. They are still getting quite a bit of snow then.

It's only long and boring if you make it boring. Long there is no debating. But there are lots of things to see anywhere you drive. If you are making a road trip out of it-Then it's up to you to make it interesting.

Cool

Dude, drive, if time permits, but get some sleep while doing so. Don't try to be "superman" and do it non-stop. You're just kidding yourself. Take I-81/I-40 out and I-15/I70 back. These super jocks on here that drove across in 2 days didn't tell you how funky they stank and how tired they were.
