Incident yesterday.

Run came in for a GM dealership in our district.....Report of a man crushed under a car that had fallen from a hoist.Our Engine was first on scene and we found an employee in his early forties lying on the garage floor being assisted by co-workers.Quick assessment showed VSA (vital signs absent),and we immediately began CPR and defibrillation.I went in the ambulance and worked on the patient straight through to the Trauma room where he was pronounced.

Apparently,he was working under the car when it somehow fell,pinning him underneath.Fellow employees physically lifted the car and dragged him out just prior to our arrival.Workplace health and safety and City Police are investigating.

I know there are a pile of folks here that work on their own vehicles.Please be safe when doing so,you just never know.....

I don't trust anything man-made. I don't trust jack stands or ramps. Something could always go wrong but what can ya do. I try to be as safe as I can while under jack stands.

I have heard of jack stands being driven into soft asphalt on a hot day, allowing the car to fall. Previously I have used blocks of solid wood (such as glulam beam offcuts or beam stock offcuts). I can't see them failing - I put them with the load going across the grain so it won't split along he grain.

 

That sucks. In the Air Force I worked part time at the auto hobby shop. Our job was to stand around until either somebody asked us for help, or we saw something unsafe.

I walked by a guy that had put the floor lift arms under the spring seats in the rear, and had both arms together and the ends under just the front crossmember. If that lift would have jerked when it hit the top end of its range that car would have bounced right off and onto him standing at the air controls.

I don't trust jack stands either. I use them, but I still have the floor jack under a solid point with just a little tension on it, just in case.

 

I feel for the guy and his family and his fellow techs working on Toyota's for 25 years rack placement it something you don't take lightly. I have witnessed four vehicles coming off racks thank god no one was injured in those incidents all four were not related to rack failure three were due rack lift pad placement and the other was weight shift when the tires on a 4X4 were rotated the tech pulled off a tire and their she went right on her nose in a shop of our size it is not a sound you ever ever want to hear again.

Thats really unfortunate. We had an incident in our shop yesturday as well. One of our mechanics was crushed between a 60K aircraft cargo loader and the interior wall of an aircraft hangar. The story goes, the operator was backing up the loader and the mechanic was spotting him back. The operators foot slipped off of the brake pedal and onto the gas.

I was told that his pelvis was broken in 5 places, an artery in his thigh, along with a portion of his large intestine was crushed, and one of his arms was messed up to some degree. Last I heard, they had him in a drug induced coma and was in surgery. I figure he'll be real lucky if he walks after this.

Just kinda makes you look at your own life a little. How quickly everything can change.
