Ford, Dodge and Chevy are American companies. Toyota is run by the Japanese. Some Toyota trucks might be designed by Americans, but I'm sure they still have to go through 'corporate' in Japan before approval. Americans might make these Toyota trucks, but it is ultimately supporting a Japanese business.

If american overpaid union schleps could put out a reliable product that actually lasts and doesn't fall apart right after the warranty is up, maybe more people would own them.

More money from the Tacoma stays in the USA than any "American" truck manufacture.

As Chris said, most of the money stays in the US economy. And it's supporting an American worker(obviously domestic cars built here do as well). Very little of the cost of a vehicle is actually going back to Japan. Although even if it did, who would you rather support in the case of a domestic branded car built in Mexico or a foreign car built in the US? The suit in the corner office at corporate or the average American actually building your vehicle on the assembly line?

I used to be like your friend. Then I got older and smarter and now I still own my sweet 87 Chevy 4x4 but also a great little gas sipping 2.4 99 Toyota.

What have I learned? I never have to open the hood on the 99 but definitely have to check fluid levels way more often on my wife's 05 Avalanch.

Place one of those high end Lexus race cars in your friend's driveway and tell me he wouldn't love to take it for a spin.

My usual response to these people is to tell them to go home and throw out everything in their house not made in America and to come back tomorrow and tell me what's left. Generally shuts them up quick because they know they would come back half naked and with an empty house.

    I was wrong.

Also, don't tell me that Mr. Toyota knows more about American trucks than the heads of Ford and Chevy. Ford and Chevy (and Dodge) have roots in America, and Mr. Toyota has roots in Japan.
Ford, Dodge and Chevy need to stick with what they do best, which is make trucks. Toyota needs to stick with what it does best, which is make small vehicles for the smaller-framed Japanese in crowded cities.

My buddy owns an F150. He likes to point out the fact that we paid about the same (he paid about $4K more) and he got a full size truck. One day he was talking about it and I turned to him and said "Yeah, but mine will still be a truck in 10 years."

We both chuckled about it because we both knew it rang true.

We can all also thank unions for the massive outsourcing of jobs from the U.S.! When blue collar, I barely finished high school, union workers that are worth about $15-$20/hour started demanding $40+/hour it was an easy decision to start moving those jobs elsewhere.

You are correct about the 40 hour work week, 8 hour shifts, and many other workers rights that were won by unions. However, those were won decades ago...what have they done lately? They served their purpose back then, but now they are little more than extortionists!

I pay my taxes, I feel no obligation to buy American if it's in inferior product.
