Not mine. The ones I released were just well fed normal grey squirrels... Harrisville was the closest I moved any of them to Connecticut :D

Yes, unless the opening is there for roof / attic ventilation, this is the way to go... ...and even if it is there for venting which as you described does not sould like is the case, louvered and screened venting can be added (cheaply) after installing a proper fascia board.

Don't use the expanding foam for that. I am a Home inspector, and that would be a 'use' that while providing comic relief on my website, should not even be considered for that application.

Also, insulation stuffed in there would not stop any critters from entering and might direct water inward as well as trap moisture against the wood, resulting in decay over time.

    what's your website?

The gap is there for ventilation. I'm not sure what is necessary, but I plan on keeping it the way it is. I might go back with a stiff wire mesh around the outside and nail it on there.

My website for my home inspection business. I am self employed and have been doing it for since 2001...

Good thinking. If it is there for venting, get some stiff fencing material (like the galvanized stuff around gardens) and either staple it (good staple gun or hammered staples) Maybe if you trimmed it with wood stripping (exterior grade) on the exterior, it would look a lot better, just stager the strips for appearance sake.

You also might look go to H-depot or the like and see what kind of 'continuous' louvered venting they have. The louvered venting is typically inexpensive (though sounds like you need quite a bit of it) and screened on the 'inside' to keep insects out as well as the bigger pests.

Throw some old hotdog water in the attic. Squirrels really hate that stuff, especially when it's a few days old. You've gotta be careful not to get the insulation wet though or your house will smell like rotten ass on a hot summer day.

You have to be careful about squirrel retaliation. They might call in these guys:

Well I guess you need to learn to like the patter of their little feet. If the problem isn't fixed getting rid of the few you have now won't solve it.

I'm going to leave one alive to tell the story of their fallen brethren.

I've got the exterminator coming on Tuesday. That should take care of the ones in there. Then I'll work on getting some welded wire mesh installed in front of the opening. Did I mention it is about 150' of opening?

Earlier this year I heard noises up in my attic and thought it was squirrels. I had always heard that if you spread moth balls around in the attic that will get rid of them. So, I went up there and threw a box full around. As I was finishing up I was shining the flashlight around and lo and behold found what was making the noises.....bats! It's illegal to kill bats (something about because they eat so many insects) so I had to get an exterminator. He told me I shouldn't have put moth balls up there because the smell mixed with heat can have a toxic effect on humans and really does nothing for the squirrels. Anyway, the bats were getting in at the 4 attic vents at each corner of the house. The exterminator used a box that made a loud clicking noise to scare the bats out and then put wire mesh over the vents. I hate varmints!

Well, they're back this year. Heard some noise in the crawl space behind my bedroom closet. Set up my have-a-heart trap and got this little guy. It's a flying squirrel. I brought it over to Rolands state. Left him off in Arcadia State Park in Exeter. About 10 miles from my house. I don't think he'll be back.

Now I have to go up in the attic and see where he got in. Should be fun, all I have is a small access door inside a closet. Need a ladder.
