If you go to Fort Stevens in Astoria, Oregon, you can find a bunch of random bunkers that aren't marked on the guide map. Just prepare for a hike through brush and chest deep grass!

Went out to Valsetz Oregon one time. It used to be a town of about 1000 people - had a post office, roads, everything. Now it's a concrete slab. If you look at the wikipedia picture, you can see the slab.

If you go out on the ATV trails in Marysville, UT, there are some pretty cool old mining equipment to climb around on

After a 13-mile hike, which is almost a 1 mile vertical change down from the South Rim of the Grand Cannon, I didn't expect to find a suspension bridge over the river.

The missile silos people go into are typically old "Atlas F" or "Titan II" silos. When I lived in KS we visited quite a few of them utilizing google, a gps, and a Cessna 172 to find the ones that were far enough from homes that we wouldn't get in trouble. Many had locks on them. The ones we got into obviously went down 40-50 ft, some large blast doors, foundations built on springs, and large silos mostly flooded from ground water holes drilled in the wall prior to abandoning. I've got tons of photos, but they're all at home, neat stuff.

I do a bit of hiking and find some interesting stuff while in the mountains here in washington. Were usually looking for this stuff and go off the trails often to search.

These first pics are of a hike to lake Isabel. Not a very traveled trail due to washouts, unmarked trails and difficulty. Most reviews say not to attempt unless very well prepared.

Found this at the top of Lake Isabel. Don't really know what it is but looked like it was used to get water.
Old Mine shaft vent found on a hike. Its collapsed and was filled with water.
Old Tube found in a creek. Its hollow inside and had some water flowing through it. No pics of the water though.
Someone hiked a canoe up there. They left paddles for it as well.
Pic of the lake itself. absolutely amazing lake once we found it. Took us two tries on the trail to find it. Missed it by about one mile the first time and almost missed the cut off the second time.

These pics are from the Sunset Mines hike we did. Got lost on this one and didnt find the big open mine. going back again in a month or so when the weather turns nice and all the snow melts:

This is an old bridge. Was sketchy to cross with the snow on top of it. Couldn't see any holes or soft spots in it. Just had to go real slow
    [IMG]
A Vent shaft from the mines. Sorry not the best pic of it
    [IMG]
Old foundation to the mine operation and mill. The rail road ran through the building back in the day.

This is from a hike we did to a fire look out tower:
Was cool being able to go up in the tower and look through the valley.

Thats a random place for a bridge!
Try and remember to upload some pics! I would love to see them

Not entirely sure but Ive seen fish feeders that look similar to that. pour dog food in from the top and at the bottom of the tube there will be a mesh screen that will only let a little of it out, or just the scent of it, and it will attract fish. cast your line down there and catch a few every time!

There is supposed to be really good fishing at that lake. It used to hold the state record for lake trout but not anymore. I might have to try that this summer when I hike back up there. I was going to bring my fly rod but might have to bring a spinner as well to drop a line in there.

Went for a drive today and took a few minutes to explore an old mining claim/ghost town. Not really "weird" for MT....lots of these sort of places scattered about. Each one has some interesting finds though...
This is a 1" thick, 6' square metal base. Guessing it was on a concrete foundation at one time and supported some variety of mining equipment :notsure:

    weirdstuff_04fbb05bc14958ad1b8ab459888754f264f27dee.jpg

And the remains of one of the old buildings. All that's left is the rock foundation and a door frame.

    doorway_c789d7f47bfa6e3b31a5f45528dd77ee950d286d.jpg

And the stone gateway to the town. It sort of takes you by surprise if you're not aware of the town's existence...just driving up a single lane, dirt forest service road and you come around the corner to find two big stone obelisks. Seems pretty fancy for such a small, out of the way place.

Went to explore another mining area today. I haven't been here since I was a kid! I remember seeing these brick kilns and being amazed by them when I was little...got the same reaction today.
    kilns1_1564350760a3ae0ed121bfbaf17b7ff2c6a41f77.jpg
    killns2_ae0d82de91929da7b1d07fd4ba2685606570fb2a.jpg
    kilns3_b41e4525b7bdb34a24f82bfb911f4b7694076e5b.jpg
For reference: the doorways (seen in the first pic) are just over 5' high, the horizontal bands are about 7' from the ground.
This area had several large silver and lead mines active from the 1870's through the 1890's. The brick structures were kilns which produced charcoal (partially burnt, dried out timbers) which was transported to the mine for use in the furnaces needed to smelt (refine) the ore. Charcoal was lighter (easier to transport across the hills to the mines) and burned much hotter than fresh timbers which helped the smelting processes. The bricks were made by hand, on site from local clay and other materials. There are about 2 dozen kilns in various stages of disrepair. Such amazing craftsmanship just eroding away.

What strikes me, other than the architecture of the kilns, is that after 140 some years you can still smell the soot.
