State Inspectors Searching Children’s Lunch Boxes: “This Isn’t China, Is It?”
Posted on February 14, 2012 by Matt Willoughby in Education

A mother in Hoke County complains her daughter was forced to eat a school lunch because a government inspector determined her home-made lunch did not meet nutrition requirements. In fact, all of the students in the NC Pre-K program classroom at West Hoke Elementary School in Raeford had to accept a school lunch in addition to their lunches brought from home.

NC Pre-K (before this year known as More at Four) is a state-funded education program designed to “enhance school readiness” for four year-olds.

The mother, who doesn’t wish to be identified at this time, says she made her daughter a lunch that contained a turkey and cheese sandwich, a banana, apple juice and potato chips. A state inspector assessing the pre-K program at the school said the girl also needed a vegetable, so the inspector ordered a full school lunch tray for her. While the four-year-old was still allowed to eat her home lunch, the girl was forced to take a helping of chicken nuggets, milk, a fruit and a vegetable to supplement her sack lunch.

The mother says the girl was so intimidated by the inspection process that she was too scared to eat all of her homemade lunch. The girl ate only the chicken nuggets ....

This hit the radio this morning up here... unreal. I'd be pretty pissed if I were that kid's parents. There's no reason for that.

Make no mistake there is a reason, it's to keep the tax payer dollars flowing to these programs and thereby continue to support government jobs and a way over bloated federal and sometimes state bureaucracies. The current Fed just doesn't get it, just this morning I heard on the radio that EVERY man, woman and child in America would have to pay $34000.00 (that's thirty four thousand dollars) to eliminate the federal debt. In case your wondering how many individuals that amounts to 311,800,000 in mid-2011 ( Three Hundred Eleven Million Eight Hundred Thousand people - not sure if this includes illegals) The math is freakin staggering. WAKE UP GREECE! - sorry I mean AMERICA!

Okover, I feel somewhat better now.
P.S. Glad my kids are grown and out of school - look out grandbabies.

Yes my tax dollers at work.Welcome to the Socialist States of America.Don't just look at the state levels. They did mention the full school lunch,if I were the parent there would be a visit to the school and the state inspector to see what they looked like if fat too much food no lunch for you. I understand Raeford Co. is very poor but there is no excuse for that action.

Maybe they should implement this in some of the upper levels of government like Congress or the Senate... Lots of fat politicians, maybe they should lead by example for a change

Exactly how were they able to search a student's personal property without a warrant? Were the parents present and gave permission for the search? Confused

That would not fly with me, I'm pretty sure if that were to happen to my son that would be the last lunch the inspector inspected.

My kid's lunch is made specifically for him and there is a reason for it. It's bad enough the school district cut the school nurse to two days a week and the designated school staff can't take care of him anyway...

Unfortunately when you step on school grounds you give up a lot of those rights. They are able to search lockers and backpacks without a warrant so a lunch pale wouldn't be any different.

Searching a lunch pal is one thing... telling a kid that he can't eat what his parents provided for him and making him eat the school's lunches is way out of line in my opinion. It's not the school's place to make the determination. At best, I think the only thing they should do is send a letter home outlining their concerns with the child's lunch and let the parents decide how to react. Unless the kid doesn't have anything to eat, there's no reason to force them to eat the school's lunch.

i agree 100%. The school board would get a personal visit and some few choice words if that were to happen to my kid.

Actually, pizza is one of the "healthy" food choices. The tomato sauce on the pizza is considered a vegetable under government guidelines.

What if the kid has a specific diet due to health concerns?

Its also funny how people blame things like this on the president when its clearly an individual's actions at or below the state level.
