People begging for money

Over the last 10 years it seems like it has become the norm to see people at exit/get on ramps asking for money

Even in parking lots walking around asking for money

Yesterday, I pulled into a local convenient store and there was a van in the middle of the parking lot, a man was walking around from car to car asking people to give to the cancer fund, there was a sticker that was written on a plastic jar that looked like a pretzel jar, actually it wasnt a sticker, it was handwriting taped to it saying cancer fund

The man asked me if I would like to give to the cancer fund, I said NO but you need to move that damn van sitting in the middle of the parking lot before someone drives in here and plows into it

I could barely get into the parking space because it was in the way

Also, sometime ago, I heard about a couple that got arrested for scamming, the cops found out that the man and woman made over 150k that year begging for money at exit ramps

So... what do you do? Do you all give money to everyone that asks or do you think twice about it because there are so many people scamming?

I usually tell them (from sitting inside my truck) that "I'm broke too since I built this truck".

Can someone spare some $ so I can lift my truck?

Seriously though, I tend to not give unless I know for sure they are legit. Even then I've heard that only a very small percent ever reaches the cause.

If you really want to help someone...offer to buy them a sandwich or drink instead of just ponying up cash/change

If theyre legit, they'll welcome the free meal or non-alcoholic drink

offer them food and water rather than money99% of the time they either get ill or flat out refuse it

other times they accept...ive had this one guy on a bike ask for money, i didnt have any but offered to scraggle loose change and buy him a hamburger. bought him a 99 cent burger and a free drink and he told me hes been homeless for a while gave me his moms number and said if i ever needed work done to call her and she would find him

Speaking from personal experience on the real I went homeless for a bit in 2007. Ran into some bad luck, had a few falling outs and life just temporarily sucked. Thing was I couldn't bring myself to beg because I'm stubborn on hard earning my keep. Long story short I got a job at Strauss Auto after 3 months of being sick and tired, and just wandered around until my luck turned around. Do I feel bad for beggar's yeah, a little bit. I think it's wonderful that people can bring themselves to help a stranger that has probably went from a decent life to strait shit and give back a bit. Problem is for me that I see the reality of laziness daily and it gets worse every day that I believe if you want something you go get it. Rock bottom isn't low enough to stop pushing forward.

They had a big news story a couple years ago about "Proffesional Beggers". Showing people with regular day time jobs getting off work and dressing like a homeless person and going out and begging. They had it down to a science on what to put on their cardboard sign and all. Some of them were making between $350-$500 a day!

I give to legit things, salvation army, etc... But if you catch me in a good mood, and are not a dick about it, I'll toss something to someone homeless. Few weeks ago there was a guy a couple blocks away from work on my way in, and he was not the normal guys that I see hustling who know better than to ask me after 1st couple times they asked. I always like to hear the story, they hang out at the gas station and say there car is out of gas a few blocks away and they need money to get gas to get home. thats the normal story, but this guy came up with a good one, and if i had money I probably would have gave him a couple dollars. But, had no cash on me.

I live in Raleigh NC, and I see a lot of the same people year after year. Sitting at a light, I'm amazed at how many people give money to them.

I keep thinking about the guy who stopped me as I was getting into my car in a parking lot. He had a bike with a flat tire. He just needed a dollar in change to get him going again. I did give him one, and then watched as he went through the lot getting probably 15 more dollars in a very short time.
Per hour, he's probably doing better than me........

Never.I'll give to the cancer funder at the store but will never directly to someone on the street.I came up on a girl during the summer once where she just hit the street and started spraying herself down with a water bottle. To make it look like she was out there a while.
They had a news story in Fresno once saying pan handlers were making over 100k a year just from begging and since then I doint give squat.I dont make close to 100k.Why should they for doing nothing.

There used to be a guy at a nearby town that used to beg in parking lots, he handed you a card, the card said he is deaf and needs money

He did this for over 10 years

Finally someone snuck up on him one day and pinched him
He hollared oh shit, then the word got out that there was nothing wrong with him, his scamming came to a quick hault

Ya know, I did that once. Came back to the offramp later and the food was sitting on the ground, the "hungry" individual long gone My wife and I give to many legit charities, and I know the money is being used for its intended purpose.

A couple years ago, there was a guy in a wheelchair with a cardboard sign at a local offramp. Another guy with a sign approached, apparently violating some territorial boundaries. The guy in the wheelchair jumped out of his chair and chased the guy up and down the ramp I was laughing so hard I didn't realize the light had changed.

I struggle with this because so much of it is a ring of people feeding alcohol/drug problems. They work in teams and shifts, share the same signs etc.

I prefer to donate to legit organizations.
