People make too big of a deal of things. And this is NOT a big deal. It's neighborly. But what's even more neighborly is knocking on their doors and hand delivering it. When you're doing things like this, it's important to keep an open-door policy. That way, if there's any problem, they come to you first as opposed to phoning it in.

 

I would fill them with creek sand, not rocks or gravel. You can buy shredded tires, they are shredded to about the size of an acorn or smaller, they work well to stop bullets. You could fill the tires with them and have a pile in the area too. Our local PD uses a hillside covered with shredded tires.

There will probably be a couple layers of carpet for the round to penetrate before hittting the tire. This should help prevent richochet should it occur.

 

My suggestion, if you want to target practice close to others' properties, is to get yourself a pellet gun of comparable weight and sights to your hunting/range firearm. In this way you can practice your skills in your backyard without annoying or endangering the neighbors. It would take only one misfired round to put you in a world of hurt if your neighbors are less than a couple of miles away.

I think practicing with a fake gun would be a silly idea. Unless practicing technique for drawing in different situations, and firing off a double or triple tap. But anything to do with accuracy will be compromised and train you incorrectly. A pellet gun cannot get you to adequately practice lining up your second or third shots becasue of recoil differences.

I used to practice with a CO2 pistol to do triple tapps because I had a habit of double tapping hesitating then pulling the third and I wanted that to be smoother and thoughtless. So I carried it around the house and would draw and squeeze 3 times then reholster. No ammo was needed. That worked for me. Sorry I strayed off a bit.

To the OP, can you please give us a rough idea of what your"backyard" is like?
I think some people are thinking you're in a tightly packed residential area, while others are visualizing the backyard of a farm house, etc.
Just wondering, I know it is not the point of the post, but just wondering?

You need to check your local regulations as even federal regulations differ from area to area. I grew up shooting on national forest land in Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado but when I was stationed in Louisiana I got a ticket for shooting my .22 in the national forest.

Not only are their firearms regulations there may be noise and range-creation specific regulations for your state or county too. Also, it boils down to common courtesy. While the neighbors might not object to the occasional crack of a gun used to dispatch a snake or squirrel the constant banging from someone firing 50+ rounds a day might well get on their nerves.
