I prefer IFS. Solid axles are great for their uses, but where i'm at currently, I need the IFS to soak up big bumps in terrain, and track better.

Plus its my daily driver, and i prefer not to give my kidneys a thrashing just driving around.

Have you ever taken one offroad?

And for the people talking about a 4 door rubi, that defeats the perpose of not wheeling my truck. I'm not trading for a jeep, i'm looking for a trail rig.

I'm 24 and this will be my trail rig. I get what you're saying and that's why i'm keeping my truck.

The rental JEEP, it was fun. We didn't take any of the tops off but if it was ours they would always be off in the spring and summer. Lots of fun.

I have a Taco and also have a 92 YJ Wrangler, been in my family since it was new, has 63k miles. I love it and parts are readily available from many many vendors. I love my jeep as a second vehicle. They are loud and uncomfortable for trips of any significant length.

I will say I have done a lot of mods to my jeep and it is a money pit but fun to work on.

I've had two XJ's, that's Cherokee in civilian language. The did EVERYTHING a Wrangler with similar mods would do, except I also got to carry their coolers, as they couldn't.

After the first offroad outing, I started charging a "tax" for cooler carrying. I never had to bring drinks or eats for offroading trips again! ;)

That's a good looking YJ. my dad has a '93 but it looks nothing like that. He's waiting for me to move closer to him to help with the mods.

Exactly! I want an XJ for function, not the wrangler because they're cool. I want to carry friends and any camping gear we may need. I went on a camping trip up in maine and i was the only vehicle that could hold all the gear.

I think that you already have made up your mind on the XJ. If I was building a trail rig with occasional street use, they would be on my short list. Solid axles, front and rear and a simple, reliable powertrain under a small-ish SUV is just what the doctor ordered. There are some short-falls for certain, like the unibody, but nothing that cannot be dealt with, especially considering the huge aftermarket support.

I also think that it is funny that when some people see the name Jeep, all they can think about is the Wrangler.

I'm also a Jeep guy and for the money you could snag an XJ for they're hard to beat. My other DD is a 98 XJ same color as the one you had. I paid next to nothing for it, it's roomy, decent power, rides better than my taco, what's not to like? Also parts are plentiful on craigslist.

I have owned several Cherokees. In my opinion, they are the way to go if you want a jeep. Way cheaper then Wranglers and a great wheelbase. With the right set up, they go all over. I currently have one and a Comanche which is also plenty capable, just hard to find. Pics of mine...

you're correct. i'm pretty sold on the XJ, but i was wondering if anyone had a comparable alternative. ya know what i mean?

i definitely thought about that. like a pre-'85 that has a solid axle. the problem is, they're difficult to find and when you do find them, they're rusted out or beat to hell. :(

I would LOVE to get my girl a new 4 door with lift n 35"s....but the prices are ridiculous.....I mean....It's a JEEP for fucksake.

I had a 90 Wrangler for 12 years and loved it. I got an offer on it that i could'nt refuse so i sold her:(

After i got my Tacoma , the JEEP was a summer rig, top off, stereo blasting ($3500 system) took it to the dunes at the coast....awww...miss her!

A solid axle 4Runner would be cool too, but like you said, rust can be an issue. My buddy in TX just picked up a rust free example for around $4000.

I had a tweaked out 09 Rubicon. You talk expensive. And as always underpowered. Guess what I traded in for a Taco?
