shoulder surgery tomorrow

Getting shoulder surgery tomorrow 2/24 at 6 a.m. getting pretty nervous. Getting a "slap repair" anybody gone through this? Gotta change my oil in my Taco and everything else that requires 2 arms since im gonna be out of commission for thd bext 2-3 months.

I've not had the spacific repair accomplished but have had similar work done twice on one knee. As I understand it, you will have a place holder put in bone by way of drilling to reattach a muscle. My first knee surgery failed after donor parts failed to graft after transplant. Other than that, I had no problems. I understand your location is a little more painful but had better success.

I had my right ACL repaired in April of 2011 which failed in December. Just had it repaired again 3 weeks ago. It's all better once you are on the road to recovery.

 

I've had shoulder reconstruction surgery. I'm not sure what "slap" is, but basically all of my tendons had stretched so much, nothing was holding the shoulder in anymore. They detached the ligaments, stretched them tight, and reattached with plastic plugs. Also had the front and back scoped during the same surgery to clean up the joint.

I will tell you, it sucked. The rehab was awful, and the pain right after surgery was pretty bad. BUT, once you get past the initial few weeks and regain the strength, it's night and day. I had 20+ dislocations in that shoulder before surgery, and not a single one since then. And I don't take it easy on it, either. So good luck, and just remember...it's worth it in the end!

 

Yes I have had shoulder surgery. In fact I have had both of my rotator cuffs operated on . With in 3 years of each other. It has been 7 years sins. Good luck healing. Just give it the time that the doc says to heal and you will be good as new. When its all over and done with you will be glad you did it . No more pain!!!! In fact I am recovering from ankle surgery as we speak. Thay had to fuse 3 of the joints in my left ankle. I will be down for 3 to 4 months also. Hang in there Bro we will be back befor you know it!!!

 

Thanks for the replies guys! Helps me feel a lot better. I am going in for surgery in 30 minutes... 6am my time. Glad too cuz I'm super thirsty haha. "slap" repair is where your bicep connects in your shoulder it pulls your labrum off the bone. They have to reattach the labrum/bicep tendon with anchors back to the bone with dissolving screws.

 

Good luck man.. Have a nice rest. I loved it when I got put under woke up feelin like million bucks until the pain mess started to ware off. But it's not too bad.

OP - I've had 4 shoulder reconstructions, 2 on each. 2 SLAPs and 2 Bankarts.
You'll be ok, should all be done through scope. It will suck a bit. Stay ahead of the pain with meds, but you should be only on motrin after about 2 days, then only using some naprocyn or percocet for sleeping at night. Biggest thing is keeping it in the sling and not moving it to let it heal. Then it gets stiff and physical therapy is to get your range of motion and strength back. Do as they say, do not push it. If you are not an athlete that needs 100% of your range of motion, I do not recommend stretching and force to get it back. It will come in time, although if severely limited, then do it so you function normally. PM me if you need more info or have specific questions.

Had something similar. Surgery wasn't bad. The physical therapy sucked. Getting everything moving again after being stuck in a sling.

 

Good luck man. When I was in college I got a slap tear in each shoulder and then my senior year added a second posterior tear to my left shoulder.

I went to several specialists and did a ton of research and finally decided to not have surgery.

3 years later and my shoulders are stronger than ever and have no issues. My Dr says as long as I remain fairly active my shoulder muscles will stabilize it fine.


I wasn't able to wrap my mind around being out of commission for almost a year.

 

Oh and the only thing is I have lost some range of motion due to the way I lift and have gained muscle.

Only thing it effects is my throwing ability, which I also dont have because I tore all the ligaments in my right elbow...

Good luck and stick with the therapy and rehab. It's a slow but steady process!

 

Keep up with all your exercises and do not over do it at all. If you do you'll really really increase your recovery time. And trying to sleep with shoulder pain in nigh impossible.

 

The surgery was not the best... Woke up covered in hives and I just couldn't come out of it, Just wasn't waking up. I hate that feeling! My nurse was lame too and didnt even send me home with ice packs. However My brother in law showed up with an ice machine and shoulder attachment to save the day! No pain on day one since I got a nerve block but WOW total deadening of my entire right arm, that is the most awkward feeling! Kept making my fiancé squeeze and bend my fingers cuz it felt like it was not ever gonna get feeling back.

Woke up in pretty bad pain but have been able to stay on top of it for the most part. A bit of pain is ok though compared to the complete loss of feeling I had yesterday. My Amazing fiancé has made this entire process so much better and easier. I'm a lucky guy

Ive been through it twice on the same shoulder myself

The 1st time one of my buds was the Doc`s asst, he told me they needed to go back in because he said they could`nt find a tool and it was inside my shoulder still, I was like OMG WTF

He waited a few mins for me to gather my senses and said he was j/k

Hope your doing well post surgery. Feel for ya. Been cut twice now. In 2005 I started my labrum tear, it got bad in 2009 and I ended up having a SLAP and sub-acromial decompression in April '10, rotator cuff and bicep tendonisis in April '11, and to top it all off hit by a F-250 on bicycle in Sept. '11 and class III A/C separation all to my good old right shoulder.

Good to hear they did the bicep tendon, they will help alleviate possible impingements like I dealt with after the first surgery. Read that you got the nerve block in the arm, yeah crazy feeling, even worse when it starts to wake up. I remember trying so hard to move my fingers cause they would curl in but I couldn't get them straight.

Advice...thank your lady for taking care you they put up with a lot during post surgery recovery. My wife is still dealing with my shoulder nonsense. ICE, ICE, ICE and ICE...didn't ice as much on my first surgery and the difference was insane on the second one. Was a different surgery and I had experienced it before, but I felt like ROM came faster and pain levels were lower. Take your meds and stay pain free if you can. When you feel good remember you shoulder is fuked. Have someone do some cross friction massage over the scar once its closed up to help break down the scar tissue. Again don't do anything to jeopardize your repair, seriously. Only thing you need to do is follow your PT and do your home PT.
