So my room mate works for Flour and is on assignment in Columbia (about 2.5 hours away). he works 6 day weeks and only comes home saturday night. this will be going on until september. Anyway, in order to get a few days off for christmas, he had to work through last weekend and will be working through this weekend (14 days straight, 10 hours a day). So here's what happened. He owns a late 90's BMW 750iL.
For those of you that aren't familiar with BMW's the 750 is the flagship, costing upwards of 100k depending on the options (his is fully loaded). It also has a 5.4 liter 12 cylinder engine. the older models do not have nearly as much power as the new ones but they are still very fast.
Anyway, he asked me to drive it yesterday so it wouldn't be sitting for too long. To be honest i didn't want to because of the fact that if anything happens to it it costs a small fortune to repair. But being a good room mate i drove it. and i drove the SHIT out of it! This thing dwarfs a crown victoria, but it handles like its on rails. i didn't know it was possible for a car that size to take turns at the speeds i was taking them. of course the tires are rubber bands and over a foot wide each, so there is alot of surface area. Now on to the speed....
zero to 60 is fast, but i have been in quicker cars. but 60 to 100 is unbelievable! i'm serious, it takes litterally only a few seconds to jump from 60 to 100. and i think the 100 to 140 is even faster. (for the record i didn't quite hit 140 but i got close). this thing is like a rocket at highway speeds. the downside is that with 12 cylinders it burns through gas like nobody's business. i averaged 11 mpg (according to the onboard computer).
Long story short, if you ever get the chance to let loose in one i highly recommend it. but hopefully i will not be driving it again since i will either kill myself, someone else, or have my license suspended. basically, i have zero self control when i have that much power at my toes and couldn't help but floor it everywhere i went. i'm much better off with a slow lumbering truck. but damn..... i still cant get over the overall feel of the car. $100,000 will buy one hell of a driving machine. smooth as silk, and the engine was quiet but still somehow managed to scream. anyone else driven one of these?
