I cashed in $235 a couple of weeks ago from my change for the last 6 months. It definately adds up! I have used coinstar before but I use the machine at our credit union now and it does not charge us for counting since we are members.

Yup.....went in last summer and cashed in about $250 worth. I've started a new bucket. Any change I get from anything, I throw in there. I hate change.

I had to make 2 separate trips in 2 days. They have a limit on how much you can cash in on any given day, or else you could totally fill the machine up and nobody else can use it (until they empty it).

Try going to whateer bank you have an account with. Most of them have coin counters now and don't charge you like Coinstar does.

The one here has a $1000 limit. And they do look at me, since I have several liter beer steins from Germany that I put my change in. I've broken $500 several times, and yeah, people do look at you funny.

I used to do it at the credit union for free, but then noticed that I could get Amazon credit for no counting fee, so now our spare change goes towards getting random items off our wish lists.

No way would I use a Coinstar - I can't stand paying for it. I always spend my change. I keep it in the pocket just under the steering wheel on the right on the 2nd gen Taco. I never allow it to get too full, usually a couple of bucks max. Occasionally it will get more, then I use the self checkout lane at the supermarket and load that puppy up!

BTW Casinos in Vegas will do it free as well!

I get rid of change once a year. Coinstar gets 10% around here which is a rip off so they only get my pennies. It's worth the 60 or 70 cents to not have to roll those. I roll the rest of my change ever since my bank started charging a fee to run it through their coin counter.

That was my point above. If you want cash? Sure, avoid Coinstar and go to a decent bank or CU.

But if you're willing to accept store credit or gift cards (the Coinstar here kicks out Amazon, Cabela's, Lowe's, Eddie Bauer, Starbucks, Disney, Old Navy, Pier 1, and Borders, even though we don't actually have many of these vendors around here). Not quite as good as cash, but more convenient for me than the bank.
