..interesting, look at the appalachian plateau/mountains, ..appear to be a geographical obstruction to tornadoes... also looks like a lot of very long track tornadoes

Tornadoes dont form over mountains really due to their high pressure systems... Only clouds and other incremental weather can form in low pressure.

hmm, ..that graphic, only going back 56 yrs, ..would not show the longest track (and most deadly american) tornado, the tri-state tornado from back sometime in the 20's..?

And people wonder why I refuse to live in the midwest and east. This is just one of the MANY reasons.

yeah, ...but it seems like you trade one basket of perils for another, pretty much no matter where you go, at least in the CONUS.... coastal areas in the east susceptible to hurricanes and n'oreasters, ....southwest flash floods, downbursts (thunderstorms), mudslides, earthquakes, northwest floods, volcanic eruptions, tsunami...

Always thought this growing up in Pittsburgh, and living in the Mt Washington neighborhood, always thought that could never happen. My mind was changed in 1998.

yep, and this graphic is evident of penetrations into the alleghany platuea/mountains in PA, one looks like a really long track... i wish the NWS used better coloring scheme for discriminating the F-scales on this graphic...

Ya that would of been nice, with the different colors. I almost think this graphic is more for shock value thing though. A news maker sort of thing.

also, there is some obvious lack of fidelity, ..that may be misleading.... for instance all of the tracks appear to be straight, continuous lines,... tornadoes don't necessarily go in a straight line, and may not touch the ground (i.e. be a tornado) at all times... the actual paths are likely segmented lines, ..with varying F-scale intensity; a long-track supercell can produce numerous distinct tornadoes as it undergoes multiple cycles of intensification and decline over its life...

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
We rarely see tornadoes in Montana, but we get some awesome thunderstorms! This shelf cloud dropped in for a visit Friday night...
