At this moment, I am sitting here typing on my aluminum Apple Powerbook G4 that I purchased in early 2005. It still looks and runs as good as the day I bought it and have only had to replace the battery and power cable one time. I have traveled about 350,000 miles with this baby. I'll use it until it dies and then I'll try to get it fixed.

I also own a Macbook Pro, an iMac 27", 2 iPads, and last night I bought my 6th grader a Toshiba Satellite L755 for his birthday. It's our first PC in the house in over 8 years and on first impressions, it's very nice.

neither one of mine has made 5 years. Is it is to get in touch with support if I need it and are they very knowledgeable? Dell was good in the past I know, but Gateway I wasn't happy with.

While pricey the Macbook Pro is my vote. I've had two of them so far and I do work with Windows daily. Love the Mac OSX. Little treat of viruses, easy to maintain, lots of applications for it including Microsoft Office.

Imo as far as brands it's a crap shoot. We've had HP/Compact's that were great but my brother had and HP that was a pos. My step daughter had a Gateway and I'll just say this, I'll never have another one in our house, didn't last a year. My wife had a Dell although it did last pretty well, physically it was falling apart, keys falling off the keyboard and part of the plastic was coming apart to where the screen wouldn't open and close properly. We have Toshiba's now and so far they have been great but it's only been about a year and a half. My step daughter has an HP that has been good I guess but it keeps losing our printer connection. I don't know if she's doing something to cause this or if it's a software issue.

The biggest and most important thing to me is getting a good processor that will handle what you want/need to do with it, and getting the features you want/need.

Don't buy a crap book. Now here comes the :crapstorm: Honestly the MBP is a good laptop but there are far better laptops for half the price such as the ASUS G73, G74. I've owned both and coming from a desktop going to the laptop I had doubts, one was heat.. a laptop's worst enemy. The second being performance, they usually use mobile versions of desktop GPU's which don't perform quite as well and let me tell you when I got my G73 I was not disappointed at all. I worked the hell out of that laptop and it performed better than my expectations, tried to overheat it by overclocking and had it stable around 3.6 GHz without a notebook cooler. When ASUS announced the G74 I quickly jumped on board and haven't looked back, plus they have one of the best warranties available. 1 year parts and labor, 2 year accidental.. best bang for your buck IMO.

I used to work on computers for a living, they are just like cars. I you take care of them they last.. It depends on the user, I've probably fixed upwards of 5k computers and the majority of them were porn related. Some porn sites are known to have malware, the only reason you don't see more apple computers being fixed is due to the lack of viruses on the market for them. Well that's all changed this year, there are now viruses for OSX so I'm sure there will be plenty of macs needed to be fixed.

Again, I'm sitting here typing on my 7.5 year old Powerbook G4. Don't know any PCs that last long. This thing has never had a problem... starts up every time, doesn't ever freeze up, never shuts down unexpectedly... hell, even the wireless card, graphics card, screen and hard drive are all original. Not a thing wrong with my computer--and it hasn't had any buttons fall off or stop working, or even look used. My sister has been through 3 PC laptops over the same period. I keep trying to get her to go Mac but she hates change. Buy Mac... you will have zero regrets, even 2 years from now when the PC you may buy will likely go ass up.

What's your price range? I would start there. Won't hate on Mac but there's so much out there for a fraction of the price that will be very good. Can't speak for longevity in the desktop world because I build my own and usually just rebuild and upgrade every couple years for shits and giggles. As far as laptops. My last one was a Toshiba and that served me well for over 5 years with no issues. Sold it for a couple hundred to a co-worker who it's still working great for. I downsized from a normal laptop to an Asus Zenbook since I don't use the laptop as my primary computer. That's been awesome so far and my other experience with Asus has been good. I'd check out some of their stuff.

Sure, if you were already planning on spending the kinda cash a Mac would cost, sure go for it. However I wouldn't increase your budget that much to get one.
