I've heard this from a couple of people but they told me if you string up something shiny like a quarter in some kind of trap that they will grab it and "will not" let go of it even while you beat them in the head with a bat!!!

Those saying just kill them should be careful. I don't have a problem with that, but many states treat racoons as game animals with seasons and regulations to follow. I am sure most have special permits for nuisance purposes but make sure because a lot states' game laws carry stiffer consequences than some types of roberry or assault.

why not just contact your local Animal control and have them remove the Coon? They will euthanize it safetly. Why would you want to risk ANY chance of contracting rabies?

    None but soon......
Catch it in the trap then drive over it with your truck.....buy a new trap and repeat!

In all seriousness though they aren't THAT bad. Just wear gloves and use something to carry the trap with.

i have caught many over the years and let all of them go with no problem. the only problem i have had is finding a skunk in the trap now and then. buy the trap that has only one door on the end, not the have a heart with two open ends.

True, in my area raccoons require a Fur Harvester's license and their season is nov 1-jan 31.

But the footnote 1 on page 22 of the Michigan DNRE handbook:

"1. Raccoon and coyote may be taken on private property by a property owner or designee all year if they are doing or about to do damage on private property. A license or written permit is not needed."

Yup, check your local laws. Good here :)

There is one animal I'd never even consider releasing - possum. They all believe they're Rambo and have the overconfidence (and sharp teeth) to back it up.

Sounds like you are using a "have a heart" trap and not a "coon trap". Down here in Texas the best bait for have a heart is Peanut Butter....it has a very strong scent and is a basically a nut, which is something they would eat in the wild.

The problem with have a heart traps is...if you catch a skunk instead. Then what do you do? locally we have an agriculture extension service that will come out for free and kill them with a blow gun and remove them..but that doesnt guarantee they wont spray in the process. At least they dont spray you.

There is a home made lethal trap that resolve this issue...you fill up a big garbage can half full of water..out a piece of styrafoam with peanut butter on it..let if float..and put a board as a ramp up to the top...they fall in drown in water...kills coons, skunks, rats squirrels without too much mess.

And if you do catch one with your have a heart...just put a big towel over it when you open it up. And it will be a good idea to do that while transporting them to calm them down. They wont attack you. Just open it and run.

We trap hog and javelinas down there and let the javelina loose..and they are meaner and faster than wild hogs. They always run away.

    Good Luck.

Lots of traps are not big enough, the crafty 'effers take the bait but keep their hind quarters outside of the trap so they can back themselves out. It's also a good idea to put a piece of plywood under the trap so they don't dig out. All it takes is one escape and the cocksuckers are wise to the trap and wont be fooled again.

Soda crackers with chocolate sauce is a good bait if you go the trap route.

Apparently you can also mix poison (like rat poison) with tuna salad and they'll lop that up and wander off to die......but that seems pretty awful, and there's a big possibility of a neighborhood dog or cat eating it.

I have a coworker that lives outside the city with a home bordering a nice size hunk of timber and he is literally tortured by them. They're a pain. Good luck.

Pen up a couple of good, trained coon hounds in the area around the shed. They will probably get tired of the harassement and move on to somewhere else.

Magpul got a lot of business from you. :)

But yeah, a large garbage can or storage tote filled with water kills quickly. Dunk the whole cage in.

Cat food works well as bait.
